We share concerns about radiation and lack of privacy from the full body scanners and the more aggressive pat-downs. Those with limb loss already face challenges when going through airport security. We are working with TSA to improve training and officers rsquo; sensitivity when dealing with the limb loss community. We are gathering information on these new measures. We advocate respectful treatment by TSA for all travelers.

ldquo;I had to make a decision to go forward, not knowing what was going to come. And that was important, that I took action in that moment, overcoming fear. rdquo;
~ ACA member Aron Ralston
While climbing alone in a remote canyon in southeastern Utah in the spring of 2003, an 800-pound boulder shifted and pinned Aron Ralston rsquo;s right arm against the canyon wall. For 5 days, he tried to move the boulder to release his hand, but to no avail. Sleep deprivation, starvation, dehydration and hyperthermia began to take a toll on his body as well as his psyche. Since he had broken his own cardinal rule by telling no one of his whereabouts, self-amputation was the only way to freedom.
But the amputation was only the beginning of his escape ndash; he still needed to rappel down a 60-foot cliff and walk nearly 5 miles before he would see other hikers who could help him.
127 Hours, released on November 5, 2010, stars James Franco and is based on Ralston rsquo;s true story. The film is directed by Danny Boyle, who also directed the award-winning movie Slumdog Millionaire.
Troy Farnswoth, CP, FAAOP, vice president of Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics Upper Extremity Prosthetic Program, worked closely with Ralston to create a prosthetic arm to allow him to continue to participate in the activities he enjoys, including rock climbing. Learn more about Aron Ralston and his new prosthesis and watch the movie trailer here.

Clinging to the vertical face of a massive boulder, you inch your way up with nothing but strength, agility and willpower supporting you. Your outstretched hand fails to find purchase, and you topple backwards into the void, screaming your frustration as you fall. Happily, your plunge ends a mere dozen feet below, in a safe (if uncomfortable) landing on a thin foam mat. You get up, dust yourself off and climb again. And fall again. And again. And again and again, until you will yourself to the top of the outcrop.

ldquo;I had just been put in the Plexiglas screening booth, rdquo; said Peggy. ldquo;My 4-year-old son was made to sit across from me, crying because they would not let him touch me. Everyone was looking at us. Then the TSA agent asked for my prosthetic leg. I knew they could wand my leg, but he insisted on taking it from me. And if that wasn rsquo;t humiliating enough, he asked for the liner sock that covers my residual limb, saying I had to give it to him. I felt pressured to give him my liner even though it is critical to keep it sanitary. I was embarrassed to have my residual limb exposed in public. rdquo;

The Amputee Coalition is saddened by the passing of life member Doris Ekstrom on November 19, 2010, after a long and valiant battle with cancer. Doris was born in Elburn, Illinois, and settled in Knoxville, Tennessee. She was an enthusiast for cooking, reading and especially fishing, a sport she traveled the continent to pursue. In 1985, Doris lost several fingers and both legs below the knee. When the Amputee Coalition opened its doors in Knoxville a short time later, she and her husband, Karl, put in many hours helping around the office. She was also very active in the Amputees Coming Together support group in Knoxville.
She is survived by Karl Ekstrom, her husband of 40 years, three brothers and one sister and several nieces and nephews. The family requests that memorials be given to the American Cancer Society.
People with limb loss who are in the path of hurricanes should pay careful attention to local weather reports and emergency personnel. Above all, heed instructions to evacuate and make certain you inform emergency personnel that you have special needs.

Patient safety is a pressing healthcare challenge that affects millions of people. Pain management therapies provide significant benefits to people with pain, but no treatment option ndash; including the decision not to treat pain ndash; is without risk.
The American Pain Foundation (APF) is proud to launch PainSAFE trade; (Pain Safety amp; Access For Everyone), a new initiative that educates people with pain and healthcare professionals about the appropriate and safe use of pain management therapies in an effort to reduce risk and improve access to quality pain care.
PainSAFE is a Web-based initiative that offers up-to-date information, practical resources and tools to inform consumers about pain treatment options and their safe use. It also includes a central hub of evidence-based information and practice-based tools for healthcare providers. PainSAFE was created with input from expert advisors, people living with pain and allied organizations to address safety related to all pain management therapies. The content of PainSAFE will continue to evolve and adapt as scientific and policy research uncovers new findings about pain treatment and safety and the real-world effects of recommended approaches.
