Protests as
Arusha is named world’s 8th
‘worst city’
Did ‘Travel Bible’ drive only on
Sanawari rugged, filthy road?
It was once
described by former US President
Bill Clinton as ‘the Geneva of
Africa’.
But that view is
not shared by travel advisor
Lonely Planet, which has just
named Arusha as a destination to
be avoided in its recently
released list of the ‘world’s
most hated’ places.
Officials and
residents have reacted angrily
to the blacklisting. “This is a
deliberate attempt to tarnish
the image of our town,” stated
the Municipal Director, Mr.
Raphael Mbunda. He refuted LP’s
claims that the town was a
‘rusty, dirty place’ infested
with crime and tourist-hounding
hooligans.

Courts in
Arusha region in dire need of facilities
While the judiciary has started to implement a special
project aimed at modernising its information and communication
technology to speed up and improve efficiency in dispensation of
justice, Arusha region
is facing an acute shortage of court buildings, especially in the new
districts of Karatu, Longido and Simanjiro.
The shortage has
led to judges and magistrates to work on a shift basis in order to
reduce the volume of cases in the courts as they can’t operate
simultaneously for lack of sufficient offices and court rooms.

Gems going
back on show
in Arusha
Gemstone
exhibitions, which were held annually in the 1990s in Arusha to showcase
the country's mineral potentials, are to be revived.
The annual event
will from next year be organised in the municipality and will feature
all the gemstones that are being mined in the country for export.
David Jairo, the
permanent secretary in the ministry of Minerals and Energy said recently
that the gem shows were important in marketing Tanzanian minerals
abroad. According to him,
the annual exhibitions and sales shows used to generate up to $600,000
annually. They were held at the Mt. Meru Hotel in Arusha from 1992 to
1999.
