The Baddest Backcountry Shred Machine: The Subaru-Based TRAX STI

The Subaru-based TRAX STI Ken Block #8217;s suped-up Subaru started as a basic rally car. Vermont SportsCar pushed it to 400 horsepower with a turbocharged engine and replaced the tires with cat tracks to enable rally power in alpine conditions.
Sure, you could take the lift up with the rest of the gapers and ride the designated, groomed slopes back down to the ski lodge, but then you would be lame. Rally car racer and DC Shoes co-founder Ken Block prefers something a bit less conventional, like his Subaru-based TRAX STI, the world #8217;s fastest cat track operation automobile.
Based on a race-ready Sube WRX STI, the car was tweaked by Vermont SportsCar to pack 400 horsepower, competition dampers, a turbocharged, intercooled STI engine and, of course, cat tracks where the tires used to be. Although not shown in the video below, the backcountry badass also can pull a custom fiberglass four-person sleigh that can hold four snow boarders and their gear.
The goal? Delivering boarders to backcountry locales traditional ski lifts–much less traditional automobiles–could never reach. That’s not to mention the fun you can have simply racing around in the snow with rally car speed and handling. ZMP RoboCar G #8211; Electric Three-Wheeler Computer-Controlled Robot Vehicle

We recently come across a Honda 3R-C electric three-wheeler to be debuted at Geneva, but there are no firm indications as to when one will be able ride it. Contrary to this, ZMP Inc, the Japanese robot building company has come up with a three wheeled concept, RoboCar G. And here, it is confirm that you will be able to ride this vehicle in or after November 2010.
Developed on the basis of the single-seater EV by Gunma University’s Next-gen EV Study Group, the vehicle is all set to usher in the era of cars that will be driven by robots. This vehicle will be equipped with sensors that will not only help drive it in a better way but it can also operate as a computer-controlled robot vehicle.
RoboCar G will come along with a stereo camera, GPS, range finder, milliwave radar and sonar sensors. Whereas the sensors will be installed as per the user choice and will be connected via a network, RoboCar G will be shipped as a computer-controlled robot vehicle.
There is no word from the company about its price but the one can talk to get the things (particularly sensors) fixed in the vehicle as per choice, and price will also be fixed on the types and the number of mounted sensors. And the shipment for the same will start in November.

World’s Largest Solar-Powered Boat Unveiled

At 31m long, the world’s largest solar-powered multi-hulled vessel has been unveiled. The catamaran, dubbed PlanetSolar, is expected to produce up to 103.4KW of solar power to drive its engine which needs just 20KW to achieve a speed of about eight knots.
The boat has been designed for a global circumnavigation planned for 2011. The 60 ton catamaran has been built at the cost of about $24.4 million at the Knierim Yacht Club in Kiel in northern Germany. The boat’s 38,000 photovoltaic cells have been provided by SunPower, which are claimed to have an efficiency of at least 22 percent.

It seems odd, in this age of all things being beautiful, to be so enchanted by something so ugly… in the prototype stage, anyway.  But you’ve just got to admire the sheer, problem-solving ingenuity that went in to the JR Jokkaido dual-mode vehicle.  This just might be the solution to the mass transit problems of sprawling, car-centric cities like Los Angeles, Houston, etc.

Fisker Coachbuild goes green with new plug-in hybrid

Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide, Inc. (Nasdaq: QTWW) and Fisker Coachbuild, LLC announce the launch of a joint venture in Fisker Automotive, Inc. – a green American premium car company. Fisker Automotive will offer a range of environmentally friendly premium cars #8212; with the first production car to make its Worldwide North American debut at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show in January.
Initial production is anticipated to be 15,000 vehicles annually with pricing to start under $100,000.  Design and technology development are already underway for the first production car.
