Becoming A Jewelry #8220;Hobbypreneur #8221;
Jewelry Business - By: Laura Kay
The latest buzzword in the business world is hobbypreneur which is someone who is in the process of, or has already, turned a hobby into a small business. The term really took off when there was this news story about various people who were turning their jewelry and craft making hobby into viable businesses. People who work with beads and make jewelry are natural hobbypreneurs because there is obviously only so much jewelry you can make for yourself before you start looking for ways to make your hobby pay for itself.
Starting you own home jewelry business and becoming a hobbypreneur may not be easy, but more and more people are jumping in and trying anyway. Interestingly, the market for handcrafted jewelry and the rise of the hobbypreneur are both tied to some very common social and economic trends that we #8217;ve been seeing for a while:
Aging Population: It pains me to say this ( #8220;Oh, my aching neck and shoulders! #8221;), but we #8217;re all getting older! Baby Boomers are retiring and looking for ways to keep busy (like learning new craft skills) and many now have the time to find new interests. I #8217;ve noticed that the people visiting my jewelry booth each year are more than likely people over 40. Maybe it #8217;s just my traditional jewelry style, but I have too many teenagers looking to buy my jewelry.
Down Economy: Whenever the economy goes through a prolonged slump and jobs become scarce people do two things: they cut back on expensive luxuries and they look for ways to make more money. While gold and gemstone jewelry may be out, most people can still afford much less expensive handcrafted bead jewelry. In fact, I would argue that a recession is a great time to start a jewelry business. With a down economy you #8217;ll also find more people jumping into jewelry making as a way to not only have jewelry for themselves, but also to raise a little extra money on the side.
New Technologies: Have you heard of this thing called the Internet? LOL! Websites like Etsy and eBay and electronic shipping carts have all made it so much easier for people to sell and buy handmade jewelry. We #8217;re no longer limited to just buying jewelry supplies from the local craft store: instead we can jump online and shop for beads and jewelry supplies from around the world! The same technology that allows you to buy beads from another country also allows you to sell to the entire world!
Look around and you #8217;ll find that most people who are making and selling bead jewelry probably hobbypreneurs who started out working with beads on a whim as a relaxing hobby and then quickly moved into trying to make some money from their jewelry designs. It #8217;s fun to do something you love and get paid for it at the same time. For many of us it #8217;s still a novel idea that our hobby of jewelry making can actually be a decent source of income if you #8217;re willing to put in the time and energy to grow it into a small business.
I think you #8217;ll be hearing a lot more about hobbypreneurs in the future and I think people who make their own jewelry will be right on the cutting edge. We #8217;re smart, resourceful, good looking and not afraid to learn new things!
Now let #8217;s just hope we can have fun and be profitable!
Update: Dionne, who wrote the excellent Bead Jewelry Profits At Last e-book took the term #8220;hobbypreneur #8221; one step further and call bead jewelry makers who have turned their hobby into a business #8220;beadapreneurs #8221;! See her comment below!

Bead Jewelry Blog is back online #8230; I hope!
Jewelry and Beading News - By: Laura Kay
After a week of server problems, I think Bead Jewelry Blog is finally back up and functioning fairly normally. I had to move from one type of hosting to another things didn #8217;t exactly go smoothly. I think most everything works now, though I did lose all my categories, so I #8217;ll have to create them all over again.
I #8217;ve added a #8220;tag cloud #8221; of jewelry terms to the site, but most of my posts don #8217;t have tags, so it #8217;s taking me a while to go back through 5 years worth of jewelry making articles! I #8217;m also working on new categories, but that #8217;s going to take some time as well.
Thanks for your patience!

Bead Manager Pro 4 Upgrade
Jewelry Software - By: Laura Kay
If one of your resolutions this year is to finally start turning your jewelry making hobby into a business, then it might be a good time to take a serious look at the latest version of Bead Manager Pro! I #8217;ve written about Bead Manager Pro before, but they just released version 4 which adds a lot of features that make it even easier to use and customize than previous versions.
Bead Manager Pro 4 is here!
I #8217;ve written about all the features any jewelry software should include and Bead Manager Pro has all those as well as lots of #8220;convenience #8221; and usability upgrades that allow you to use the program to your advantage. Here are some of the more prominent improvements that will help you spend more time making jewelry and less time worrying about the inventory and financial side of your jewelry business:
Customizable list views that allow you to add, widen and even move columns of data around.
Duplicate parts option, which allow you to enter your inventory much more quickly.
Quick search filtering options that allow you to efficiently look through a large inventory of beads and jewelry pieces.
Added jewelry calculators which allow you to discover your profit and loss as well as an hourly rate calculator for more accurate pricing.
There have also been some #8220;behind-the-scenes #8221; database changes with the intent of making Bead Manager Pro more stable and run more efficiently. Remember, Bead Manager Pro is one of the only jewelry software programs that will run on an Apple Mac as well as a Windows PC.
What about all of us who have already bought and purchased the program in the past? We can get the new version of Bead Manager Pro for free by following a special link that should have been emailed to you. You can contact support if you have issues. The upgrade is completely free and after you install it and your current database should automatically be upgraded.
You don #8217;t necessarily need jewelry software to run a home-based jewelry making business, but it certainly helps your business grow more quickly by giving you a tool that produces professional invoices, calculates proper pricing and helps manager your large inventory of beads and supplies in a relatively quick and easy manner that is head and shoulders above using pencil and paper!

Making Bead Jewelry for Haiti Earthquake Relief
Jewelry For Charity - By: Laura Kay
While the whole world tries to comprehend the Haitian disaster and do their best to help the Haitian people, some jewelry artists have been turning their skills and ingenuity towards charitable ways of raising money to help the earthquake victims. Time and time again I am always proud and encouraged by the way so many people turn to making jewelry to help their favorite charity, and the people who have begun making jewelry to Haiti are no different.
Of course, Beverly Hills jewelry designer Raju Rasiah #8217;s donation of all his jewelry from the Golden Globes to help Haiti has been in all the news, but he #8217;s just one jewelry maker out of thousands all over the world who are interested in helping. And while there have been plenty of celebrities starting to work towards helping Haiti, it #8217;s more heartening in my mind to see regular jewelry makers and real people pulling together to help Haitians. It #8217;s still early yet, but there are already jewelry makers and beaders and designers who are trying to raise money and awareness with their creations.
Here are some other people using the jewelry they made to help Haitian earthquake victims:
Donate now to have a chance at winning an Ida Jefsen original necklace!
Ida Jefsen is Holding a Donation Auction for Jewelry: It was only a few months ago that I wrote about the amazing pieces being made by jewelry designer Ida Jefsen! Now she #8217;s helping Haiti by offering a one-of-a-kind piece of handmade jewelry to the person who donates the most to the MercyCorps Haitian relief effort through her MercyCorps donation page! Her goal is to raise $500 before this Wednesday, and she says that she #8217;ll start another round of giving jewelry away to the high donation on Thursday! This is a unique opportunity to raise a lot of money for Haiti while also having a chance to win a great piece of jewelry from a wonderful jewelry designer!
Ann Weydert: Lots of news outlets are reporting on the jewelry making efforts of Ann Weydert. She was making jewelry for Haiti long before the earthquake struck. She was making jewelry and giving the money to an organization called Food for the Poor which was able to use that money to build two homes and even construct a water well for the people of Haiti. Ann normally saves up all her jewelry money and then makes one donation at the end of the year, but now she #8217;s sending down her them money she makes from her jewelry as soon as she can because it is needed immediately to buy aid supplies and food.
Ruth Adomunes: Like Ms. Weydert, Ruth Adomunes has been making jewelry for Haiti long before the earthquake struck. Ruth began making bracelets on a whim and was soon raising money for the Haitian Health Foundation on the suggestion of a friend. The organization used the money to build #8220;Happy Houses #8221; which cost just $500 to build, but were much better than the shanties that were being lived in. The Boston Globe featured a story about Ruth Adomunes #8217; jewelry making for Haiti a few years ago if you want to read more!
Lots of Etsy Jewelry Designers: Okay, I admit #8230; there are too many kind and generous bead jewelry makers out there to even mention! One quick search for all the Haitian relief jewelry on sale on Etsy and you know that lots of people are trying to help out any way they can. Some people are donating all of their jewelry profits, others are giving a percentage, and some are even donating all the money make from selling jewelry, which means they are giving away the money it cost them to make the jewelry as well! There is even an Etsy collective known as Help For Haiti which is selling donated jewelry and giving the money to Doctors Without Borders.
These are just some of the many, many people who are helping to raise money for Haiti #8230; If you are aware of others, or you #8217;re making jewelry for Haiti yourself, please let me know!

Three Different Bead Museums
Jewelry and Beading Fun - By: Laura Kay
As you may have guessed, I love bead jewelry and I love beads! At the beginning of each year my husband and I start looking around for some place to go for vacation, and while searching I ran across a bead museum in Washington, DC! Then, as I looked some more, I found four different bead museums scattered around the country. I haven #8217;t been to any of them, but here they are so that if any of you are traveling or live near them you can check them out!
So here #8217;s a brief synopsis of each, from east to west!
MBAD #8217;s African Bead Museum #8211; Detroit, MI #8211; If you #8217;re into African beads or art, then this is definitely the place for you! The MBAD African Bead Museum is one of the most well-known and perhaps largest collection of beads, textiles, sculptures and art from Africa and the Museum itself has been in operation for over 25 years, with the current 17,500 sq. foot location being a site to behold!
The Bead Museum #8211; Glendale, AZ #8211; If you #8217;ve heard of one bead museum, it #8217;s probably the one in Glendale, AZ. It was started in 1984 as a place to keep and display beads from different cultures throughout history. They have permanent as well as regularly changing exhibits as well as a museum store and a website filled with interesting information.
Picard Trade Bead Museum and African Art Gallery #8211; Carmel Valley, CA #8211; Here #8217;s one I didn #8217;t know about before I did my resaerch, but now I #8217;m really looking forward to the next time I go to California! What #8217;s amazing about this bead museum, other than the huge collection of art and beads, is that they have a large part of their collection on line! Right now they are featuring Venetian chevron/star beads from 1800 to the mid 1900s and they have lots and lots and lots of beautiful photos online. You can also access all the photos of the Picard Trade Bead Museum #8217;s past bead exhibits.
And one that #8217;s now closed: Bead Museum #8211; Washington, DC #8211; Though now closed due to mounting operating costs, this museum once featured a large bead time line of history that was apparently pretty impressive and their website still has some information about bead shows in the MD/VA/DC area.
Of course, if anyone has been to any of these I would love to hear about them! Just leave a comment!
