Organized as part of the 2011 International Information Visualisation Conference, the 5th International Symposium of Information Visualization in Biomedical Informatics (IVBI) is a forum for the presentation of original research in information visualization theory and applications to biomedical data. The symposium covers all aspects of visualization and issues affecting presentation and interaction with large and complex data sets.
We encourage submission of papers covering new techniques, old techniques applied in novel ways, new methods, interesting applications, and in-depth surveys. Proceeding will be published by the IEEE Computer Society, with ISBN number, and to be indexed by IEEE Xplore and other major bibliographical search engines.

The best and most simple online authoritative antimicrobial (antibiotics, antifungal, antiparasitic, antiviral and antitumor) guide in my opinion is The Antimicrobial Index. Most importantly, it is regularly updated and it is freely available with no registration. It #039;s packed with antimicrobial susceptibility info in the form of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) data.

This is an update for those people considering taking one or more of the University of Manchester #039;s online courses, beginning in March 2011.
Mathematics for metabolic modelling, using R, is nearly full. If you are interested in this course you should apply as soon as possible.

The inaugural issue of EMBnet.journal: bioinformatics in action is out! This first issue marks the complete transition from EMBnet.News, an online magazine produced by the EMBnet community since 1994.
EMBnet.journal will provide biomedical scientists with practical information to help tackle routine data-analysis tasks (basic and advanced), implement complex, multi-faceted IT architectural infrastructures and address the many new challenges of modern, data-driven life sciences research.
This new online journal will comprise two main parts: one part will focus on peer-reviewed primary research articles, reviews and technical notes and the other part will contain useful information and resources including commentaries, user-guides, training information and news.

Software: gCut 1.0 DNA restriction analysis tool

gCut is a tool for restriction analysis in a DNA sequence. It will find the restriction sites of a given enzyme (tetra and hexa enzymes only) and perform the cut. It #039;s written in Python, compatible with FASTA format sequences, and can analyse sequences of any size.
Example of tetra and hexa enzymes: EcoRI G/AATTC (hexa), HaeIII GG/CC (tetra)

UGENE is free, open-source bioinformatics software. It has a friendly user interface, runs on Linux, Windows, MacOS and Solaris, contains a library of highly optimized algorithms, and has very moderate hardware requirements to run.
This release includes:
Support for quot;cloning in silico quot;. From now on, it is possible to automatically digest sequences into fragments and construct new molecules from defined fragments. This functionality is the first step to fully support the cloning feature, which is one of the top requests from UGENE users.
Brand new feature: Query Designer. This tool lets you analyze complex signals in the DNA sequence using simple rules to set constraints for algorithms. Check for more details in the corresponding documentation section.
HPC and GPGPU support: The Smith-Waterman algorithm now works using OpenCL on both AMD and NVIDIA cards.
