Long time no talk. Changes are afoot around here.

Some of the content from this site will be migrated over there.
fileslip.net is a non-commercial project focused on linguistics, language revitalization, language documentation, and doing the same sort of geeky programmy stuff I #8217;ve been doing around here.
There may be more to come about Amundo before too long, announcements will end up here if they do. But for now, blogging here will be well-nigh not.
Thanks for all the great comments and thoughts over the years (!), I hope to see lots of you over at the new digs.

Vietnamese → English: A dissident #8217;s works find an audience in translation

Vietnamese writer Dương Thu Hương #8217;s life has been nothing if not dramatic. Once a true believer in the communist ideals of North Vietnam, her increasing disillusion led to her becoming a dissident.
Most of her books were banned in her native country, only to achieve international recognition in translation to French, English, and other languages.
There has been a spate of articles about her latest work, #8220;The Zenith, #8221; which is due to be published in English translation next year. The book would appear to be something of a bombshell, recounting as it does what Hương claims was a secret affair between Hồ Chí Minh and a woman 40 years younger, as well has her subsequent murder and its coverup.
Interestingly, Hương #8217;s works have found an outlet in their original language on the internet. Take a look at article about her latest book on the Vietnamese Wikipedia, and you #8217;ll notice links to the full text of the book, some via rather sketchy-looking upload sites. One wonders what Hương #8217;s response to such unofficial publication is (but I #8217;d suspect she #8217;s a fan).

In 1987 #8230; [Darrell Robes] Kipp, with others, 14-years ago, [opened] the Nizipuhwahsin ( #8221;Real Speak #8221;) Center. It was intended to be a place where the Piegan language of the Blackfeet people, could be learned-less than one hundred people could still speak the language. This #8220;immersion school for grades K-8 has become a model for indigenous peoples worldwide. One reads a lot about the imminent demise of a huge chunk of the world #8217;s language. And it #8217;s no joke, we #8217;re losing languages at a frightening rate.
But something you don #8217;t hear about so much, at least in the media, is that language groups using the internet to network, and share techniques for reviving languages.
Collaboration in language revitalization across languages is nothing new. The Welsh language has benefited from techniques ported from the revival of Hebrew: the Ulpan system has since been applied to other languages (although apparently its current status in Israel is in doubt).
But it would seem that the internet has opened up a lot more doors. Nowadays it seems less and less surprising to hear about folks from Botswana studying what some innovative folks among the Blackfoot are doing in Montana.
I for one think we shouldn #8217;t assume a pessimistic attitude with regard to the future of language. Where there #8217;s a will (and some collaboration, and maybe a bit of technology, oh, and some funding #8230;), there #8217;s a way.
It really only takes a generation to save a language. Stay tuned #8230;
