Here #8217;s a great video series, which shows the step-by-step method to brewing beer with brew kits. They use Coopers brew kits in the videos, but any kits could be substituted. Mr. Beer and other makers of course include all the necessary equipment, such as fermenter, airlock, etc.

Step 1: Mixing
The first step is cleaning and sterilizing. We then put the can of concentrate in hot water to heat it, facilitating it #8217;s release from the can and into the mixing vat. We then add the amount of sugar and water called for in the instructions. First use hot or boiling water to melt the concentrate. Then cool or room temperature water can be added.
embed
Step 2: Brewing
The second step is the fermentation. Before we put the yeast in, we need to insure that the mixture is the right temperature. If the temperature is too low, the yeast won #8217;t grow. If the temperature is too high, the yeast will die. We sprinkle the yeast into the mixture and stir it. After that, we put on the lid tightly and insert the airlock. We then wait about a week or so before bottling.
embed
Step 3: Bottling
After a few days, the airlock should stop bubbling. This means the fermentation has stopped. You can also check with a hydrometer. If the measure is under 1006, the fermentation is completed. Now we can start the bottling process. After the beer has been bottled, it needs to sit in a cool, dark place for about 2 weeks. It will however, improve with age.
Step 4: Enjoy!

Did you know that after the initial investment in brew kits and the like, home brewed beer can cost as little as $.28 per pint? Well, apparently, lots of other people do know this. And they #8217;re making the investment. Home brewing is booming right now as a result of the current global recession. People see that the price they pay for beer will be lower. Also, many people are spending more time at home as a result of the financial crisis. Read the rest of this entry raquo;

Here #8217;s a great video of a review of a popular brew kit: Mr. Beer. The video comes off as being a bit commercial, but I do like how the brew master critiques the beer in the end. The producers of the video don #8217;t edit out the slightly negative comment in among all the positive. They leave it in and give the listener/beginner home brewer advice on what to do to make the beer even better and avoid pitfalls.
All in all, a good video for beginner brewers.
Leave a comment below and let me know what you think of the video! #8230;Or the blog, for that matter!

In his article, Matt Mosher covers the topic of brew kits and home brewing #8211; specifically college students making their own home brew. He points out that all a student needs is #8220;a little space and ambition #8221; and a beginner brew kit to get a taste of the hoppy, er #8230; hobby. Read the rest of this entry raquo;

Finally, there #8217;s a really clear, to-the-point article online that outlines the basics of brewing beer with brew kits. They did a really great job of spelling it out in clear steps so that even first-time beer brewers aren #8217;t intimidated. They also point out that if you #8217;re a first-time brewer, it #8217;s best to start with a brew kit, rather than raw hops, barley, etc.
#8220;Beginners are advised to choose from the wide range of beer kits available online and from brewing supplies stores. A beer kit usually consists of hopped malt concentrate and yeast. The kit will advise on the additional fermentables you’ll need to make the alcohol. Fermentables include: brewing sugar, dry malt extract, liquid malt extract and rice syrup. #8221;

Recently Melissa Schilling wrote an article about beer pairings #8211; pairing beers with specific dishes to enhance the tasting experience. The chef responsible for these creative dishes used in the pairings is Mark Perez of Davenport Roadhouse. The beers he pairs them with are all from Santa Cruz Ale Works.
#8220;Actually, I woke up in the middle of the night, and thought #8216;Pretzels! Swiss! Sausage! Inside a chicken. Perfect! #8217; #8221; he said.
The article also discusses organic as opposed to non-organic hops and various other technical aspects of brewing, but I just wanted to pass along these creative and delicious-sounding pairings: Read the rest of this entry raquo;

Home Brew without the Clean Up

Have you ever wanted to try brewing your own beer, but decided not to because of the investment in equipment? Or how about the clean up afterwards? Well, now you can try your hand at brewing without messing up your kitchen or investing in what you #8217;re thinking may end up having been just a fleeting fascination. More and more brew-it-yourself establishments are cropping up here and there. It seems to be the perfect compromise between buying your own and turning your kitchen and nearby closet into a brewery.
Apparently, the trend started with wine storage. People wanted to try making their own wine, but didn #8217;t want to commit the space in their home to the project. Businesses like Winestock in Honolulu started offering services to minimize the workload for these home made wine makers.
Grape D #8217;Vine in Sussex is another example of a wine brew and storage business. It #8217;s actually a U-Brew franchise started by Kelly Anderson and her husband Rob. At U-Brew #8217;s, customers buy kits and have their wine brewed for them. #8220;Basically, we #8217;d go in and pick out whatever type of wine we liked and
we would have it put on, then we #8217;d go back and bottle it, #8221; said
Anderson.
Winestock eventually started offering beer brewing possibilities to customers in addition to wine brewing. Now Winestock takes its clientelle through the entire brewing procedure, including ingredients, equipment, and even personal instruction. I found a cool article. It mentions how there #8217;s been a surge in popularity in home brewing beer.
Drinkers brew up to save cash: Shops in the West Midlands have reported a surge in popularity of home brewing kits, as drinkers attempt to beat the credit crunch by making their own beers, wines and ciders at home.
The article quotes Chris Hogg from the Hamstead Brewing Centre as saying the store was #8220;busier than ever #8221; in the 25 years they #8217;ve been in business.
The credit crunch was sited as the main reason:
With the credit crunch people are trying to do things cheaper but the big thing that people are starting to realise with home brewing is the quality. Money’s a bit tight so people are having a go and people are surprised when they taste it.

Want better quality beer? Want cheaper beer? Want to have fun with a new hobby? Take up home brewing. With the myriad brew kits that are available today, even a beginner brewer can make delicious beers.
Whether your taste leans toward ales or pilsners, wheat beers or IPA #8217;s, it’s easy to obtain kits and supplies to get you started. Typically, brew kits can range in price from approximately $40 to over $100.
I lived in Japan in the late #8217;80 #8217;s and #8217;90 #8217;s, when there weren #8217;t any micro breweries. I bought a kit and started brewing simply out of a desire to have some great-tasting beer around the house. I bought the cheapest brew kit I could find which came complete with the necessary ingredients. If memory serves, I think the total for these homebrew supplies came to about $60 or $70. Several weeks later, I had my very first batch of delicious pale ale!
Brewing with the home brew kit came to be a fun activity. Both clean up and prep are easy and quick. I enjoyed the entire process #8211; from the initial mixing of the ingredients, to the fermentation, to #8211; - #8211; Ah, yes! To the first tasting of that new batch.
One of the great things about home brewing beer is the literally hundreds of variations one can try. Whether you’re a novice, using canned malt extract, or a veteran brewer, there’s virtually no limit to the variations you can enjoy.
If you’re a beginner, the best way to get started is to buy a popular kit (I like the Cooper’s Brew Kit and the lower-priced Mr. Beer Brew Kit.) and the reference book “How to Brew”, by John Palmer. The kit will of course, include instructions for your first batch, but “How to Brew” will help you quickly gain more skill and confidence.
For those experienced brewers, “How to Brew” is a must have. With all the tips, tricks, conversion charts, and other resources, your brewing will go to the next level.
