The Box Office

I usually don't care for box office numbers, but its still nice to see that the Nolan brothers can do once again quite well with a smaller film. You can check out some video interviews and some videos from The Prestige Premiere, with all the usual suspects at IGN There are a lot of interviews around, DarkHorizons has one with Christian Bale, one with Hugh Jackman and one with Michael Caine. Here is another interview with Jonathan Nolan on writing The Prestige.

This is a bit tangential, but Larry Holden, who starred in Memento, Insomnia and Batman Begins, is hosting a fundraiser in London to get his new film “All Sun And Little White Flowers” made. Be there and support independent filmmaking!
As part of a continuing, international fundraising effort for our next film, “All Sun And Little White Flowers,” Larry Holden, his wife and creative partner, Hanne Kristiansen, and his longtime producer from Ireland, Glyn Carragher, will be speaking and answering questions at Conway Hall in London, England on Friday, 10 November 2006.

With The Prestige opening yesterday (I am still waiting for the release here in Germany - sorry if I repeat myself, but January, that's just too long...) a ton of reviews has come in. Prestige Interviews Promo

With less than a week until The Prestige opens in the USA (while I'll have to wait for another whopping three months) naturally there is a lot of promotion going on. Hugh Jackman will be on the Tonight Show on Monday Oct. 16, on Regis Kelly on Oct. 19 and with Ellen DeGeneres on Friday Oct. Michael Caine was on the Tonight Show already on Thursday Oct. 12, but he will be on Regis Kelly on Friday Oct. 20. Looks like Jackman and Caine are the ones doing TV promotion mainly.
Check at AOL where Bale Jackman are doing an episode of Unscripted, interviewing each other using your questions. There is also a new B motif of the poster.

Prestige Featurette Premiere

Just found this little featurette called "A special inside look at THE PRESTIGE". It features a few short behind the scenes clips as well as a couple of extracts from interview with Chris Nolan and his brother Jonathan, the films producers Emma Thomas Aaron Ryder, as well as Bale, Jackman, Serkis, Caine and Johansson. Here you go.
The official release is not far away and so is the Worldpremiere which will take place on Tuesday, October 17th at the El Capitan Theater, Los Angeles. (Thanks to Pat for that info!)

Official Prestige Website First Looks

Don't know how I missed that - well actually, I do. Browsing the Official Prestige Website with an alternative browser one gets redirected to a Disney dummy page. So you might have to resort to the Internet Explorer. Once you do that, you can enjoy a couple of short clips from the film that are hidden across the page. As soon as you have collected all journal pieces you can watch an exclusice one minute clip. These clips are really worth, so check it out! (Thanks to Pat, for bringing that to my attention!)
The first reviews for The Prestige begin to pop up. Here is someone on a messageboard, who has seen it, answering questions (Thanks to Ahmed!) and there is a positive review up at PopSyndicate: "The Prestige is grandly entertaining, and yet personal and heartbreaking. It is the essence of great Hollywood filmmaking."

Nolan talks about The Dark Knight The Prisoner at the Egyptian

Like I reported yesterdays there was "An Evening With Christopher Nolan" on Oct. 2 at the historic Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood where Nolan's first feature, Following, was screened along with the trailer for the filmmaker's next release, The Prestige. The Following report comes from IGN:
Nolan and his wife-producer Emma Thomas were in attendance for a Q A session after the film. The director's brother Jonah Nolan, who is scripting The Dark Knight, was also there but did not take questions from the audience.
IGN got the chance to ask Chris Nolan if The Dark Knight would delve further into the themes established in Batman Begins, specifically the idea of justice vs. revenge and the exploration of Bruce Wayne's father issues.
"I haven't finished the script yet. I'm supposed to be doing it right now," Nolan admitted, sparking laughter from the crowd. "It does, absolutely. It's a pretty direct continuation of where the last film left off, and the last scene of Batman Begins suggests a strong direction we wanted to take the story in. It absolutely carries on with a lot of the thematic concerns and hopefully takes it someplace new."
When we asked if District Attorney Harvey Dent – a.k.a. Batman's future nemesis Two-Face – would indeed be in the film, Nolan replied, "I don't want to go into too many specifics. Yes, he is."
IGN caught up with Nolan as he was exiting the event and asked if Dent had been cast. "Not yet." Would that actor be an American, an Aussie or a Brit? "You'll see," Nolan promised.
Nolan was also asked during the event about his plans to direct the big-screen version of the TV classic, The Prisoner.
"The Prisoner is something I've been interested in for quite a long time, and I think I've figured out the take on how we'd approach it," Nolan explained. "The relevance of it today. David and Janet Peoples are terrific, who you know wrote Blade Runner and Twelve Monkeys... all kinds of great movies. They're working on the script right now. I wouldn't want to speak for them. I'm very excited to see what they've come up with."

I am sorry I am basically one day too late with this, but just discovered it this morning. The No Budget Film School hosted "An Evening with Christopher Nolan" yesterday in the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles. This is from the website: "Director Christopher Nolan (BATMAN BEGINS, MEMENTO) will discuss his career, beginning with his dazzling $12,000 first feature, and gives a preview of his newest film, THE PRESTIGE, set to open October 20th. It's a very special evening you won't want to miss. Discussion following with director Christopher Nolan and producer Emma Thomas moderated by executive producer and film consultant Peter Broderick." If anyone reading this site was there, you're welcome to share that experience and write in a few lines!

Nolan to direct "The Prisoner"?

Variety just announced that Chris Nolan is near to closing a deal with Universal Pictures to direct a feature version of the 60s TV series "The Prisoner".
Series lasted only 17 episodes in 1967. Patrick McGoohan played a government agent who resigns, is kidnapped and placed on an isolated island known as the Village. He's given a new identity -- Number Six -- and interacts with an island staff trying to get him to reveal why he resigned. Plan is for Nolan to direct a contemporized transformation after he completes "The Dark Knight," the "Batman Begins" sequel that begins production early next year at Warner Bros.
Janet and David Peoples are set to write the script, David was writer for Unforgiven, Stephen Frears' Hero and co-author of Blade Runner, together they wrote the script for Twelve Monkeys. Scott Stuber, Mary Parent, Barry Mendel and Emma Thomas (Nolan's wife) will produce.
I am gonna go and watch the original series now, to see what we are talking about here... have a nice weekend everybody!

Christian Bale talks about The Dark Knight

Christian Bale is out promoting the Thriller "Harsh Times" which will be released in the UK this week. Filmfocus was the first to ask him a couple of question about the news on "The Dark Knight":
I just love that title. You know, nothing's written in stone yet, but I like, very much, that it doesn't have 'Batman' written in the title. This take on Batman of mine and Chris' is very different from any of the others and everything else always had Batman in the title. I think this is kind-of distancing it even further and saying, 'Hey, this is a whole different creature from what has come before'.
Regarding the casting of Heath Ledger as the Joker Bale said: "Heath is very much into what Chris had done with the first one and he's very passionate about the role. And he's a really good actor so we're going to see something very special from him."
On the status of the project he said: Chris and I have only just finished working on The Prestige together and I have another project before we start on Batman. I know I'm in very good hands and Chris is keeping me informed about what's going on. But more than that and I'll be whisked away in a loony van, you know, off to Arkham Asylum!"
And on working with Chris Nolan: As long as it's a good working relationship that's all that matters. But Chris is the director I've worked with more than anyone else and what's nice, when you do come to understand each other, is you do get this common language so you really don't have to speak a whole lot; often too much talking just kind-of ruins everything. And it's nice when you know the way someone works anyway and you don't have to break that ice at all. It was a very lucky thing for me when I met Chris and became part of his circle of filmmaking.

Okay, here it is! Warner Bros. has officially confirmed Heath Ledger as The Joker in the follow-up to last year's blockbuster Batman Begins. The second film in the revitalized franchise will be titled "The Dark Knight", and like the first, will star Christian Bale reprising his role as, well...The Dark Knight!
Christopher Nolan will also be returning as Director and as I mentioned a few weeks ago, his brother Jonathan will be treating a final draft script written by the first film's screenwriter David Goyer. The following is the official press release statement made Monday evening by WB upon the announcement.....
BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 31, 2006--As a follow up to last year's blockbuster "Batman Begins," Christopher Nolan is set to direct Warner Bros. Pictures' "The Dark Knight," written by Jonathan Nolan, based on a story by Christopher Nolan and David Goyer. The film will be produced by Emma Thomas, Charles Roven and Christopher Nolan. Additionally, Christian Bale will resume his role as Bruce Wayne and Academy Award nominee Heath Ledger has been cast as The Joker. Christopher Nolan revamped the Batman franchise in 2005 with the immensely successful "Batman Begins," starring Christian Bale in the title role, which chronicled the early years of the superhero. Nolan first garnered attention from critics and fans in 2000 with the groundbreaking drama "Memento," which he wrote and directed. He went on to direct the thriller "Insomnia," starring Al Pacino and Robin Williams, and recently wrapped production on "The Prestige," with Hugh Jackman and Bale.
Bale was most recently seen in the ensemble cast of Terrence Malick's "The New World." His other credits include "Little Women," "Portrait of a Lady," "Metroland," "American Psycho," "Laurel Canyon" and Steven Spielberg's "Empire of the Sun," which was his first starring role.
Ledger most recently earned Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA and SAG Award nominations and won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Ennis Del Mar in the award-winning drama "Brokeback Mountain." His other credits include "Casanova," "Monster's Ball," "Lords of Dogtown," "The Brothers Grimm" and "The Patriot."
"Chris' unique vision is what made 'Batman Begins' such an outstanding film and we could not imagine anyone else at the helm of 'The Dark Knight,'" said Robinov. "We also can't wait to see two such formidable actors as Christian and Heath face off with each other as Batman and The Joker."

And there it is! So now it officially begins!!! Before I go, let me point something else out regarding this film..; for the absolute BEST source for all Batman related news on the franchise, head over to Baman-on-film.com where it is being reported that The Penguin may be a potential villain in this sequel (I really try to refrain from calling it a sequel considering this could be a stand-alone story). There's also word from BOF that more than one of their sources has mentioned actor Ryan Phillipe as a name attached to the role of D.A. Harvey Dent, a.k.a. Two-Face. Now this is news to me but I have a source around the biz in Miami who's dropped some beans on the Penguin thing and it's actually quite interesting. As soon as I get some more, you your readers will be the first to know. And believe me, there will be more; a lot of it and quite often from here on out!
