The Senate’s aboriginal peoples committee hears an update on government commitments to residential school victims following the 2008 official apology by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Witnesses include the chair and commissioners of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Mary Simon, president of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, and Clément Chartier, president of the Métis National Council.
DEBATING THE CENSUS
Liberals are using the first opposition day of the fall session to debate the long-form census. As the government defends its proposed changes to the mandatory portion in Federal Court, MPs in the House in Commons are addressing a motion from Liberal industry critic Marc Garneau: That the House calls on the Government of Canada to reinstate immediately the long-form census; and given that no person has ever been imprisoned for not completing the census, the House further calls on the government to introduce legislative amendments to the Statistics Act to remove completely the provision of imprisonment from Section 31 of the Act in relation to the Long-form Census, the Census of Population and the Census of Agriculture.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper hosts Mongolian Prime Minister Sükhbaatar Batbold on Parliament Hill. Canada is the largest foreign investor in Mongolian natural resources, mostly mining.
TORIES TAKE POWER IN NEW BRUNSWICK
New Brunswick is preparing for a new government this morning
after David Alward and the Progressive Conservatives won a resounding majority
over the incumbent Liberals and Premier Shawn Graham. Unofficial results from
yesterday gave the Tories 42 seats to the 13 for the Liberals, who previously
held a slight majority. Nearly 49 per cent of the vote went to the Progressive
Conservatives, 34 per cent to the Liberals, and 10 per cent to the New
Democrats, who were shut out of the Legislative Assembly for the second
consecutive election.
