After 10 months, 38 of the 43 Morong detainees are released
Statement from the Morong 43 from Bulatlat on Vimeo.
Family members cried, supporters and human rights lawyers cheered and after rousing applause members of the released Morong 43 pleaded for their supporters not to give up until all of them were set free.
Under a cloak of darkness on Friday 17 December, the first of the 23 female members of the “Morong 43” group stepped gingerly out of the Camp Bagong Diwa detention centre in Taguig, Philippines. The barred walls that had kept them isolated from the world for over 10 months were no longer their keeper. As the health workers appeared one by one, the awaiting audience of tearful relatives and supporters, human rights lawyers, and media cheered; bent up frustration forgotten in one joyous moment.

Corrective rape: South Africa’s shame

New statistics have uncovered150 women are raped every day in South Africa.
Millicent Gaika doesn’t like to recall the night she decided to walk home rather than catch a ride with the friends she had just had dinner with. A night when the 30-year old South African woman was pounced on in the streets of Cape Town by a man, and then systematically tied up, beaten, strangled, tortured and raped for five hours. Her crime, the accused attested, was that she was a lesbian. The man, it was later found, repeatedly screamed out during the horrific attack that he was simply “curing” Millicent of her lesbianism.
Ndumie Funda, a local community activist whose lesbian partner was murdered in the course of a similar “corrective rape,” reached out to Millicent through a small local charity she set up to rescue and support survivors of “corrective rape.” But last month they both had to go into hiding after the South African government released the perpetrator they had helped to jail on 60 rand (less than $10) bail.

Dalits in India March for their Rights on Dignity Day
 
Hundreds of socially excluded people from Dalit communities all over India came together on 5th December in Delhi to submit a charter of demands highlighting their plights, issues and concerns to the Parliament and the Prime Minister of the country. In support of the Barefoot campaign, they raised their shoes in the air calling for their rights to be protected.

Human Rights Day 2010 Message from UN Secretary General
The UN Secretary General sends out a message for Human Rights Day on the 10th December.  This year the UN is celebrating human rights defenders, people who take action to stand up, speak out for freedom and human dignity.
He talks about the courageous women and men striving to protect their own rights and rights of others.  These human rights defenders take huge strides in defending the most vulnerable and discriminated against.
Every Human Has Rights supports the call to recognize and human rights defenders and we’re asking everyone to think what they can do.  Take a first step to becoming aware of human rights by joining the Barefoot Against Poverty campaign – thinking about people living in poverty with their basic rights being denied.  By joining the campaign you can also join us throughout the coming year to take further steps for human rights including learning, sharing and taking action.
