File Extension DAT
File extension DAT is mostly associated to data files used and referenced by several applications. This is one of the very common extensions used in the computing world. However, files are not readily accessible by common applications. Dat files can only be accessed on operating system platforms including Mac and Windows.
Data file is only accessible by the applications that created it. For Internet Explorer, the file Index.dat contains information used by the browser such as URL's and other relevant information. It serves as a database where information can easily be accessed when needed.
Instant Messengers such as Yahoo Messenger (YM) store chat history in a data file. This file is only accessible to YM for recovery, but other applications can delete it as part of system maintenance. The file may contain text, data, and date and time when it was last modified in the metadata part.
Several worms and virus associate themselves with data files to prevent detection by anti-virus applications and continue to run as background programs. Other malicious applications also search for .dat files to harvest information such as usernames and passwords.
Aside from the applications that created the .dat file, some data files can be opened by applications such as Notepad or Editpad Pro. Mostly, these are binary files that are not human readable so opening it through their defined application is the best alternative.
