Minneapolis, MN BlackNews.com Black History Month is a celebration of milestones led by prominent figures throughout history. But every day, African Americans are making a critical difference through their compassionate decision to join the Be The Match Registry as potential marrow donors or by donating their newborn baby's umbilical cord blood. These selfless decisions give hope to thousands of African Americans with life-threatening diseases, such as sickle cell anemia and leukemia, who need a second chance at life. Jennifer Jones Austin is a prime example of an African American leader who deserves recognition this month, but in her case she was the one in need of a marrow donor. In September Ms. Austin, an attorney and child advocate from New York, was diagnosed with leukemia. Massive Campaign Brings Hope to Thousands of Patients Waiting for A Bone Marrow Transplant

If you ever want to see a community come together, give them a reason, and that is exactly what happened this past weekend at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Smyrna, Georgia. While thousands of patients all over the world were praying for a compatible bone marrow donor, in one of Atlanta’s suburbs, hundreds of strangers were rushing to registration tables, to be the answer to those prayers. After an intense weekend of long hours, the results were as expected of this Catholic Community. A total of new bone marrow donors were added to the registry, representing possible miracles for those patients that are waiting for a second chance of life. The success of this bone marrow campaign was the result of several organizations coming together with one mission. Volunteers make a difference

We had very high expectations while organizing the bone marrow drive at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church on January nd and rd. Through the grace of God, we were not disappointed. St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church proved to be fertile grounds in every sense of the word and demonstrated that when we come together as a community, wonderful things can happen. When we requested help to maximize our recruitment efforts, we were delighted with the support we received. Upon arrival at the church, we were welcomed by an outstanding group of Filipino nurses and many of our friends who were there to help us with our life saving mission. Our wonderful and dedicated group of volunteers not only helped with pre-labeling kits, revising consent forms, and moving tables and chairs, but they even provided transportation to those who could not drive. As campanhas da Icla da Silva em Connecticut e Massachusetts serão comandadas por Patricia Fernandes A fundação Icla da Silva, que realiza campanhas de doação de medula óssea, conta agora com uma moradora de Danbury para intensificar o trabalho nos estados de Connecticut e Massachusetts. E é com muita disposição que Patricia Fernandesencara este novo desafio. A contratação da brasileira é nesta semana. Acostumada a trabalhar como voluntária, ela teve o privilégio dedoar a medula óssea para um paciente de anos, no ano de Depois de ver uma amiga de infância morrerde leucemia duas semanas após descobrir a doença, Patricia se colocou à disposição da fundação. La Visión se complace en presentar a los Hispanos del Año. Si bien en un principio se pretendía nombrar a una persona, la masiva votación de nuestros lectores y debido a las misiones que realizan en beneficio de la comunidad, hemos decidido reconocer a estas dos personas, un hombre y una mujer. La pasión de Alina Carbonell por trabajar en beneficio de la comunidad hispana data desde hace muchos años. Primero fue en el área de bienes raíces cuando impartía seminarios o ayudaba a las familias que estaban a punto de ver cómo su sueño americano de tener su casa propia se desvanecía y ahora, como reclutadora de donantes de médula ósea para ayudar a pacientes que sufren de leucemia u otro cáncer a la sangre, y requieren de un trasplante para sobrevivir.
