Aired: February 27, 2009 You Have the Right to Protect Yourself amp; Those You Love... If you or someone you love can't make medical decisions either temporarily or permanently, who will make those decisions? The only way to make sure that your decisions are honored is to name someone you know and trust -- a person who shares your views and values and who can be assertive on your behalf -- in a carefully written durable power of attorney for health care. The ITF will provide such a document for you without charge. It's called the Protective Medical Decisions Document. You Have the Right to Needed Pain Control ... What can be done when you're in pain? Where can you turn? How do you find help? The ITF can provide you with the tools you need to get the help you need. The book, Power over Pain: How to Get the Pain Control You Need explains how to find a doctor, how to describe your pain, and much, much more. Recent Developments... WA State Announces Elimination of Funding for Hospice Care: Less than two years after Washington State voters legalized doctor-prescribed suicide, the state announced that hospice services would no longer be funded for terminally ill patients who are on Medicaid. According to a press release announcing the decision, the action would save $4.6 million. The cost in pain and suffering for patients was not calculated by those making the decision to deny hospice services for the poorest Washingtonians. Press release announcing funding cuts More on Washington. HEALTH CARE LAW - Advance care planning is back: Prior to passage of what is now known as ObamaCare, a provision that would have included quot;advance care planning quot; led many opponents of the bill to call such planning a step toward quot;death panels. quot; The provision was dropped before the bill passed. However, in November 2010, the provision has now been put back into ObamaCare through the rulemaking process. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid services pre-posted the more than 2000 pages of the final rule related to physician payment. According to the rule, Medicare patients are to be offered advance care planning at their quot;first annual wellness visit quot; and at each quot;subsequent annual wellness visit. quot; (See pp. 766-767; 1488-1494 of the Dept. of Health and Human Services, quot;Medicare Program: Payment under the Physician Fee Schedule and Other Revisions to Part B for CY 2011. quot;) More on Health Care Law. OR Suicide rate in state far higher than national average: (Oregon Health Authority press release -- 9/10) According to the full report on quot;Suicides in Oregon quot;, statistics do not include assisted-suicide deaths: quot;Deaths relating to the Death with Dignity Act (physician-assisted suicides) are not classified as suicides by Oregon law and are therefore excluded from this report. quot; (Report, p. 6) More on Oregon. She wants to die right away. Now imagine Emma Sue's daughter, Rachel. Forty-five and healthy. Rachel wants her doctor to prescribe lethal pills for her. Should it be legal for him or her to do this. SWITZERLAND: quot;Let the distraught partners of terminally ill who commit suicide die too, says Dignitas boss quot; ( Daily Mail - - October 19, 2010 ) Ludwig Minelli, the founder of the controversial Swiss clinic Dignitas, has said a person whose terminally ill partner commits suicide should also be given help to die - even if perfectly healthy. It is not the first time Minelli has argued health people should be given the legal right to die. Last year he said that he believed assisted suicide should be available 'on demand.' More on Switzerland. ENGLAND: quot;Warnings over assisted suicide legislation plan quot; ( Morning Star - - October 12, 2010 ) Calls for legislation to allow assisted suicide could put pressure on vulnerable patients to consider suicide. The warning was issued on the eve of the launch of Healthcare Professionals for Change (HPC) founded by Dr. Ann McPherson. quot;Former GP calls for the right to die quot; ( The Oxford Times - - October 11, 2010 ) Dr. Ann McPherson has set up a group of 12 health professionals to lobby for a change in the UK's law on assisted suicide.
