Normally I like travelling by train but today the german #8220;union of train operators #8221; (don #8217;t know the right translation #8230;) though about striking from 6-8 in the morning #8211; great! So I #8217;m sitting in the train for around 4 hours now and my destination (Berlin) is far far away. Arrival was planned arround 10:30 but probably 12-13 is the right time #8230;
So my day in a short timetable:
- 3:00 #8211; WakeUp (RadioAlarm and 5 different HandyAlarms)
- 4:24 #8211; Departure Wuerzburg to Hanau
- 6:15 #8211; Arrival Hanau #8211; DAMN!!!! connecting train left 6:11
What to do? Call the DB-Hotline to get latest information! After waiting some minutes getting told how great DB is a callcenter women said she cannot get any departure information for train station in Hanau because of the striking #8230; Booted my notebook at mcdonalds showed my the next connecting train departing at 6:34 #8211; where was the problem hotline-lady?
- 6:34 Departing Hanau with Destination Schaumburg - breething deeply first..
Two nice looking female ticket collectors asked me for my ticket #8211; #8216;hey girls how are you? here is my ticket #8217; and then the next showstopper: Sth is wrong with the train so it is not possible to travel with the planned speed #8230; right at the moment we have ~30 minutes delay so I #8217;ll miss the connecting train again #8230;
So i should accept working on train the whole day because the striking is causing a massive delay within the whole german railway system.

** Update:
Rather late than never! After another delay of 30 Minutes at Europe #8217;s largest #8216;dead-end trainstation #8217; in Leipzig I #8217;ve reached Berlin at 12:30. I #8217;ve #8216;just #8217; missed ~2h of our meeting but that #8217;s (railroad-)life
Finally returned in Wuerzburg (possibly the worst looking trainstation ever) at 22:00 #8211; what a day #8230;

Monitoring Webservers with Nagios and Apache ab

Apache #8217;s tool #8216;ab #8217; is a very nice tool for benchmarking webservers. Automating and Monitoring ab-benchmarks with the OpenSource monitoring software #8216;Nagios #8217; is really useful and easy. You only need a script for Nagios running the ab-commands and transforming the measured values into performance data.
My quick-and-dirty solution looks like this (please notice that I #8217;m not the best scripter and I #8217;m always happy about running scripts also returning notification states (WARNING/CRITICAL/OK)  is not included #8230;):
Shellscript check_ab_http_benchmark (placed in /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/own/):

The next step is creating a nagios check_command (normally placed within /etc/nagios3/commands.cfg:

Now you can define a new host /etc/nagios3/conf.d/examplehost.cfg:

..as you can see I #8217;m using another http_check command for alive_checks (implemented with curl):
And last but not least the service_check:

 The check_command needs an argument which is the relativ url you would like to check.
Now you need to configure a hostgroup with the HTTP hosts and you #8217;re done. Doing some magic with pnp4nagios and special templates could look like this:
