Laminin’s Role in Breast Cancer Formation
Mina Bissell, a Distinguished Scientist with Berkeley Lab’s Life Sciences Division and a leading authority on breast cancer, led a study that showed how the cross-shaped protein laminin can play a key role in the development of breast cancer. raquo;
Reading the Life History of a 4.5 Billion-Year-Old Meteorite
Researchers have performed a micro-probe analysis of the core and outer layers of a pea-sized piece of a meteorite some 4.57 billion years old to reconstruct the history of its formation, providing the first evidence that dust particles like this one experienced wildly varying environments during the planet-forming years of our solar system. raquo;

Daya Bay Neutrino Experiment
Clues to neutrino mass lie in measuring how one “flavor” of neutrino changes into another, and the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment will examine that evanescent phenomenon. Scientists from Berkeley Lab are among the leaders of the multinational research project that brings together researchers from China, the U.S., Russia, Taiwan, and the Czech Republic. Tour the giant underground laboratory now under construction. raquo;

Nuclear Science Day at Berkeley Lab
At the first annual Nuclear Science Day for Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, scouts from 33 troops in Northern California toured the 88-Inch Cyclotron, built electroscopes and models of the atom, measured radioactivity, qualified for badges, and learned about career paths in nuclear science. The event was so popular more than 400 people had to be turned away, but, say the organizers, “We’ll do it again!” More raquo;

Thousands Visit Lab Booth at AAAS 2011
Thousands of visitors passed by Berkeley Lab's booth at the 2011 meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington, D.C. Scientists, government officials, news media, and students of all ages came to the Hall, which was open to the public for a “Family Science Days” weekend. In keeping with the “Science Without Borders” theme of the meeting, Berkeley Lab’s booth featured a map of the world marked with the many locales where Laboratory scientists are doing research to solve national and global challenges. The booth was created and staffed by the Lab’s Public Affairs Department. raquo;
