Seasonal panic day.
Regular readers will be aware that I have been suffering from being a zombie aka being rather ill. As a result I have still yet to finish basic Christmas shopping tasks like gifts for family etc.
Is anyone else running late with their seasonal celebration preparations?

Erg arg - Zombie Matt is on the loose
For a while there I had magically transformed into Zombie Matt. I was even doing the zombie groan (in my sleep as well) and shuffling in a lifeless manor. Of course this was because I had the flu and jolly nasty it is too.
For your amusement I have totally failed to draw me as a zombie because I don't feel up to it but feel free to submit your own Zombie Matt art.

Police beat up disabled woman
At some point the police have gone from noble upholders of law and order to a gang of thugs. This is the United Kingdom of Great Britain not the People's Republic of China.
In the video below you will see footage of three police officers tipping a disabled person (a woman from the video description) from their wheel chair dragging them across the road and then getting the boot in (that's giving a kick when someone is down to my US readers).

Now the way I was brought up violence is always and without exception the last resort and sometimes not even then. Kicking a helpless women is just sick.
What the hell is going on in this country?

Voucher for 25% at Vista Print
They say it's not what you know it's who you know. Well knowing me could save you 25% if you are a vista print customer.
Use voucher code VP25F30TD to get yourself 25% off your order at Vista Print - it should also score you free shipping on any order over £30.
I have it on very good authority from one of my secret sources for Vista Print that this is a current voucher code. Enjoy.

Stand by for action
I'm about to flip the site over to tweekibook2 which should go as smoothly as a well made milkshake. However knowing me it might get a bit sticky at the end. For the next few hours if things look funny consider that I am working on it. After that I'm blaming the gay alien for anything that is broken.

Smart Solutions Tech Support Scam?
I have just got off the phone from a cold caller claiming to be from a company called Smart Solutions. The opening salvo was to ask to speak to Mr or Mrs Brown and when I asked "who's calling?" The guy failed to identify himself and immediently started on his "Good morning Mr Brown..." he went on not to name the comapny but to say that they are a registered partner of Miscrosoft and that they have been informed that I may have download some maleware through Internet explorer.
Nice try lads but as an Ubuntu user I already know that you are talking through your backside. Not being in the mood to put up with this sort of thing while setting up job interviews I asked the name of the company.
At first I thought he said "Mad Solutions" because of the combination of thick accent and realy poor line. Thinking about it this could well have been a low quality VoIP connection which would explain the patchy sound. This would later help me identify the scam.
What they actually claimed to be was a company called "Smart Solutions" (No limited or anything like that so very hard to trace).
I pushed them on the subject that they had got my details from Microsoft they said that they had gotten my details from a computer mailing list and he proceded to read me my address and postcode. I ignored this and made him confirm that he was from Smart Solutions, partner of Microsoft and that my details came from a mailing list.
For a technical support guy it took me saying "Linux Administrator" several times before he started to get the idea that I was not a windows user. Top notch tech support, I do not think.
Anyway after that he was very keen to get off the line.
I smelled scam and Googled what little information I had.
I found this: Unstoppable Tech Support Scam from pcpro.co.uk.
It seems that had I kept to the script I would have been directed to a fake website instructed to download some software and then told to pay a couple of hundred quid to rescue my "poor Windows PC".
Fortunatly I not only don't run Windows I am also not so stupid as to part with that sort of cash when for a fraction of the price (or nothing) I can get a real AV or spyware remover from a lagitimate company.
The moral of this story is if some bloke phones you up and sounds like he is suggestng he works with Microsoft and trys to get money out of you tell him to stick it. Also phone the police and make them do something about it. They'll take notes and then ignore you but with enough calls then they will have to actually try and do something.

British Government to face tough choices over Wikileaks
It seems that what could be said to look like a concerted international effort to shut down Wikileaks is in danger of sparking the clostest thing to a war that the Internet can know.
It seems that very recently (2 days ago) creadit card giants Mastercard and have with others (like PayPal) moved to shut out all ability for people to support Wikileaks with donations and that low flying accusations abound in every direction. That allogations have been made against the spokesperson (Julian Assange) for Wikileaks and that a lot of heat has been applied to every aspect of the Wikileaks project. A lot of it seems to be coming from the USA while China and Russia have voiced the opinion that Wikileaks should be offered the Nobel Peace prize.
Also the UK government is once again in the spotlight as the ones who need to make a choice and fast. Bearing in mind of course that Wikileaks exposed both the US and the English government of cynical self interest while the Scottish government acted for the best in the issue of the release of a certian bomber who was at death's door anyway.
This same government is now being asked to extridite the spokesperson for Wikileaks over charges that have yet to have any hearing. Our government has demonstrated that it is happy to extridite it's own citizens to the USA for activities in the UK which in one case are legal and licensed in the UK. Not exactly a pot of hope in this case then.

New Facebook worm?
It seems there is a new virus/scam in the form of a worm.
As far as I can work out without allowing it my facebook details the worm works like this:
A number of applications are set up - this is the method that allows the worm to post. Clones of this application might be called mkiu, proj, nmm or sm7 but the post is always the same. It appears to work through the user's friends and post the "user text" which says in all cases "ha ha check this out..she is soo busted" the post itself carries a picture of a teenage girl and the text "CLICK HERE to see the status udpate that got a girl expelled from school!! you got to see this she's in such trouble".
The link URL masks itself via bit.ly and seemed to lead to:
schoolld.info/?efef6
This page invites users to login with their facebook account which I'd trust about as far as I can spit into a strong wind. After a delay it appears to redirect to iamned.com/expelled.php the domain seems to be an established if unremarkable site and I suspect that the server has been compromised to place the page. I suspect that Ned (whoever Ned is) does not yet know this and is likely to be quite cross when he finds out.
To stay safe from this worm you need do nothing. Clicking to the site is unlikely to be unsafe but clicking anything on the site is likely to be a very stupid thing to do. I am unsure at this stage what the purpose of the worm is beyond grabbing control of Facebook accounts but given the effort to compromise servers and create clone applications you can bet that this is not just idle curiosity.
For Facebook's reference the applications appear to have been added by accounts with ID 100001884958403 and 100001638416693 which is are blank accounts with no friends.

Tweekibook v2 is looking good.
You might ahve noticed that this year the site has looked mostly rubbish. My first attempt to make a theme that looked like twitter, facebook and wikipedia came out okay in a few browser but has broken bits all over. For example the search never worked and there was a lot of dead space.
The CSS and HTML was complex and easy to break. Version two rewrites everything and simplifies it so that we have stable markup. The search works, the side bars no longer break in different browsers and the footer stays at the bottom where it should be.
There are even a few e-eggs hidden in the mark up for your browsing pleasure. I hope to roll it out today.
