Net Neutrality Rules Appear Headed For Approval (B amp;C)
Senior Federal Communications Commission officials said Monday that the new expansion and codification of network neutrality rules will include a presumption that paid prioritization on the public Internet is discrimination prevented by the FCC's new rules. The order implements three basic rules: 1) a transparency rule that requires fixed and wireless broadband service providers to provide relevant information about their services to both consumers and content, applications, and device providers; 2) a no-blocking rule that prevents fixed broadband providers from blocking content, applications, services, or devices, subject to "reasonable network management," and in the mobile space prevents the blocking of access to Web sites and applications that compete with voice or video telephony services, also subject to reasonable network management; and 3) a rule, applying only to fixed broadband, that prevents unreasonable discrimination by broadband providers in delivering the traffic on their networks. Wired: Republicans, including FCC commissioner Robert McDowell, blasted the new rules as an interventionist over-reach by an activist federal regulator intent on asserting control over the Internet. Democrats, including Sen. Al Franken from Minnesota, along with public-interest and free-speech groups, slammed the rules as woefully inadequate to protect the public from the predations of an industry keen on turning the Internet into a cyber-version of cable TV, with tiers and premium packages affordable by the wealthy.
Oprah Winfrey Network, After Delays, Set To Launch Jan. 1 (LA Times)
It happened in its OWN time. After three years of planning, delays, and management misfires, OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network finally arrives Jan. 1, the biggest launch of a cable channel in more than a decade.
Hulu Mulls More Pay Plans, Not An IPO (WSJ)
Online video site Hulu has taken off the table the idea of going public, at least for now, and may consider other financing options, people familiar with the matter said. Hulu also is mulling new subscription plans that could broaden its pay-video offerings beyond the recently introduced Hulu Plus.Hugo Lindgren Poaches Adam Sternbergh From New York (NY Observer / Media Mob)
Adam Sternbergh has been hired as a culture editor at The New York Times Magazine, editor Hugo Lindgren told The Observer. Sternbergh is an editor-at-large at New York magazine, where he and Lindgren worked together before Lindgren left for Bloomberg Businessweek in January 2010. Lindgren was named editor of The New York Times Magazine in September and has since assembled a dreamy team that includes former New York staffer Lauren Kern as deputy editor and The New Republic's Greg Veis as front-of-book editor. GQ story editor Joel Lovell is believed to be joining the staff soon, too.
Hands-On With HuffPo's Elegant New iPad App (Mashable)
The next edition of The Huffington Post's iPad app -- dubbed NewsGlide -- has arrived in the App Store, serving up the publication's top stories to device owners in a newly elegant, image-rich format that improves greatly upon the previous version. Unlike the first edition of The Huffington Post's iPad app, the new version is not a replica of its Web site, but designed to uniquely suit the device and its users.
WikiLeaks Boss Julian Assange Turns On Everyone (
Julian Assange, the man behind WikiLeaks, today launched a wide-ranging series of attacks on both his enemies and allies as he defended his public and private conduct. In his first U.K. newspaper interview since releasing hundreds of secret diplomatic cables last month, Assange told The Times he predicts that the United States will face reprisals if it attempts to extradite him on conspiracy charges. He accused his media partners at The Guardian, which worked with him to make the embarrassing leaks public, of unfairly tarnishing him by revealing damaging details of the sex assault allegations he faces in Sweden. NY Mag / Daily Intel: We can already see the seeds of Assange's plan starting to take root on the margins. The military has banned the use of flash drives, DVDs, and CDs, because removable media is reportedly what Bradley Manning used. The Pentagon's networks are thus a bit more secure. But there's a reason just about everyone uses removable media: It's easy and efficient. So the policy change has made life more difficult for the military. (In Wire terms, it's like hiring a guy to spend his whole day buying burners because the pay phones are tapped.) Snip, snip, snip go the twines.
Apple Removes WikiLeaks App From App Store (TechCrunch)
It looks like an unofficial iPhone and iPad app that let you view WikiLeaks site content and follow the WikiLeaks Twitter account on the go was removed from the App Store Monday.
See, Larry King Is Not Retiring (TVNewser)
He may have signed off from his nightly show last week, but Larry King was back at work Monday at CNN. But the tables were turned, and he was the one being interviewed. CBS News Early Show co-anchor Erica Hill sat down with King, her former colleague, at CNN's studios in Los Angeles for an interview that will air Tuesday morning on CBS.
War On Christmas Resumes? NPR's Nina Totenberg Regrets Saying 'Christmas Party' (Mediaite)
On Sunday's Inside Washington, NPR's Nina Totenberg apologized for using the words "Christmas party" in a discussion about budgets. It's unclear why she became as red in the face as the red Christmas flowers behind her when she mistakenly allowed the "offensive" words to escape from her lips. Yet she does regret that no alternative expression was available to describe the party she attended.
Rush Limbaugh's TV Nemesis (The Daily Beast)
After bashing the president's tax-cut compromise on MSNBC for four straight nights, Ed Schultz found himself breaking bread with Barack Obama in the small dining room off the Oval Office. "Mr. President, the American people didn't vote for you because of a policy or your stance on health care. They voted for you because you inspired them, you got into their soul," the high-decibel host said. Insisting that he take on the Republicans, Schultz declared: "I think you're selling yourself short. You can win that fight."
For Tavis Smiley, A New Home On PBS (NYT / Media Decoder)
Broadcaster Tavis Smiley is changing the co-producer of his weeknight PBS talk show to, from Los Angeles station KCET-TV. The half-hour interview program, which is called Tavis Smiley and begins its eighth season in January, will continue to be taped largely at its rented studios at KCET-TV, which had been Smiley's production partner. But with KCET's decision to end its affiliation with PBS effective Jan. 1, the show needed to find a new partner within the PBS family.
Motorola Video: iPad Is Just A 'Giant iPhone' (CNET)
Motorola is already trying to elevate its unannounced tablet above the iPad in a promotional video released Sunday. Of course, it's easy to claim just about anything when promoting a product that hasn't been formally announced and subjected to the rigors -- and possible slings and arrows -- of independent reviews. But that hasn't stopped Motorola from denigrating the iPad by calling it a "giant iPhone" in the ad. That statement implies that Motorola's tablet isn't just a giant Droid X. We'll see, when Motorola shows its cards at CES next month.
News Of The World Pricier On iPad Than On Paper (paidContent)
Rupert Murdoch is clearly looking to tablets as a post-print, post-Web model for salvation. But if the new News of the World iPad edition is anything to go by, he may need several iterations before that happens.
Product Placement To Be Allowed In U.K. TV Programs (WSJ)
Product placement will be allowed in U.K. television programs for the first time from February, communications regulator Ofcom said Monday, which will allow commercial broadcasters such as ITV new sources of revenue.
Paul Adams, Googler Whose Presentation Foretold 'Facebook Groups,' Heads To Facebook (TechCrunch)
Google user experience lead Paul Adams, whose much-discussed slide show revealed the gaps in the way Facebook's social graph represented human relationships, announced Monday that he will be heading to Facebook in January. Adams had worked on the Google UX team for more than four years.

The Changing Of The Gatekeeper: Adapting To The New Roles For Journalists, Sources, And Information (Nieman Journalism Lab)
We're continuing our recaps of the Secrecy and Journalism in the New Media Age conference that took place at the Nieman Foundation on Thursday with the second panel discussion -- entitled "Whither the Gatekeeper? Navigating New Rules and Roles in the Age of Radical Transparency." The discussion centered on the issue of how journalism has responded to WikiLeaks and others doing some of the work traditionally done by journalists -- namely ferreting out documents and information -- and how reporters and editors remain important as the interpreters and analysts of news.
LA Weekly Dumps Art Critic Doug Harvey (FishbowlLA)
Regular freelance contributor Doug Harvey learned last week that LA Weekly would no longer be a home for his writing. During his 13 years as an art critic for the paper, Harvey made significant contributions to the city's arts coverage -- and hopefully he will soon find another home for his voice.
