Time machine: September 2005
CVK
Here #8217;s another installment of our Time Machine series #8230; when we take a look back at what we were blogging about a year ago this month.
MIXED RACE STUDENTS IN THE CLASSROOM
Appropriately enough for back-to-school season, Jen wrote an article offering advice for teachers who have mixed race students in their classroom:
#8220;What I am suggesting is that teachers acknowledge mixed identity in their classrooms. I am not suggesting that you give mixed students special treatment. I am also not recommending that you go overboard by trying to pinpoint all of the mixed students in your class so that you can rush to talk to all of them about how it is to be mixed. Not only will you scare a few by this method, but you are also bound to make a mistake #8230; #8221;
HURRICANE KATRINA AND RACE
We also discussed the way media coverage of Hurricane Katrina underscored America #8217;s race problem:
#8220;Everyone’s been talking about the “looting” vs. “finding” controversy, where blacks were labeled by the media as looting food, while whites simply “find” it #8230; Oh, and guess what Condee has been doing all this time? Shopping for shoes at Ferragamo. That’s right. And when an angry shopper confronted her on her bad timing, she actually had her PHYSICALLY REMOVED from the store #8230; #8221;
CRAP ON TV
September 2005 was a good month for sensationalistic garbage on TV when it came to race issues. Not only did Dr. Phil interview a white man who disowned his daughter for becoming pregnant with a black man #8217;s child, but Dateline did a followup story on the infamous Dutch twins of #8220;different races: #8221;
#8220;Dr. Phil has a plan to make Charlie unlearn his history and relearn the truth in a loving and open way … Will Charlie be up for it? Oooh! Any minute? Perhaps they will convince her to give birth right there on stage so that they can force her dad to make up his mind up about whether or not to accept his mixed grandchild…for all to see!! I hate talk shows #8230; #8221;
#8220; #8230;Using in-vitro fertilization, the mother got pregnant by the sperm of two different men. One white (her husband, I presume), one black. Hence, two sons — one white, the other labeled “black,” although he is really mixed since their mother is white #8230; #8221;
THE INTERROBANG (NO IT #8217;S NOT WHAT YOU THINK)
Jen gets all excited about a new punctuation mark: one that mixes (get it? get it?) an exclamation mark and a question mark:
#8220; #8230;OK. This may only be exciting to me, but I just needed to share. My brother, Dave, the fabulous graphic designer, just introduced me to the interrobang. Not only is it exciting to me because it’s a MIXED punctuation mark , but also because I always use question marks and exclamation marks together!?! SEE!?! #8230; #8221;

Happy Rosh Hashanah, Cristina!
JC
So did y #8217;all catch the season premiere of Grey #8217;s Anatomy? While certain characters make me want to rip my hair out cough-Meredith-cough, I have to admit, I love it. I think it #8217;s my way of healing since my break-up with ER years ago. :) Plus the ridiculous and inappropriate drama that goes on in that hospital is sometimes too good to miss (read: sexual relations in the operating room, interns falling in love with each other, or their patients, etc #8230;.need I say more?).
Well, Dorothy emailed us tonight to share her love of Grey #8217;s Anatomy too. We have definitely showed our appreciation for the show in the past #8212; it is one of the popular ones out there that doesn #8217;t submit to racial typecasting, and has a pretty diverse cast. We also love that Cristina Yang, Sandra Oh #8217;s character, is a Jewish character, but a multidimensional one (as Dorothy mentioned, #8220;read: not only white #8221;). She talked about being Jewish in tonight #8217;s episode in a very nonchalant way, in order to explain the concept of sitting Shiva. One particular thing that I liked is that there was that subtle moment of Cristina needing to explain to her friend that she was Jewish #8212; the assumption is always that you can #8217;t be SOMETHING + Jewish. Unless that something is white. Right? Wrong. I liked that they included that interaction. It resonated with me, as it #8217;s something that happens quite often, even amongst people who I assume know that about me.

Spotted this on Gawker yesterday. I don #8217;t know what they #8217;re smoking over at The Independent. Why on earth would they think it #8217;s a good idea to illustrate #8220;the Africa issue #8221; with a picture of a white model in blackface?
Here #8217;s the front of today #8217;s Independent (UK), guest-designed by Giorgio Armani. We #8217;ve very little to add, save to say that putting Kate Moss in blackface makes it much easier to see the coke you #8217;re cutting on the cover.

MTV - Diversity champions? Not so much.
JC
If you could give a diversity award to any cable media outlet, would MTV come to mind first? The Walter Kaitz Foundation says why yes! Advocacy group, Industry Ears says aw hell NO! I caught sight of this article which reports on the foundation #8217;s decision to honor MTV this year, and the following protest by Industry Ears.
The Walter Kaitz Foundation may think MTV Networks is a diversity champion, but a media watchdog group isn’t convinced, and it is circulating a petition claiming that the programmer’s fare is insensitive to people of color.
Industry Ears #8212; a self-described think-tank group focused on media’s impact on children and communities of color #8212; garnered more than 330 signatures on a Web site (www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/526905262) denouncing Kaitz’s decision to award MTVN with its Diversity Champions Award during its annual fund-raising dinner last Wednesday.
Industry Ears cited shows such as MTV’s Where’s My Dog’s At and Yo Momma and VH1’s Flavor of Love as shows that among other things demean women and damage young children’s self-concept and social attitudes. Representatives from Kaitz would not comment on the matter.
Not sure why Flavor of Love is mentioned since that #8217;s a VH1 hit :| #8230;the others can stand alone, I think. And let #8217;s not forget about Real World where people become nothing more than tokens or simplistic representations of the larger groups from which they come. Carmen and I have also joked before on our podcast, Addicted to Race, that it can #8217;t be much of a Real World depiction if in their 10+ years of being on the air, they have only had a couple of Asian males. It #8217;s clearly not as realistic as we would like to think. Racist? Not sure if I would go that far. Problematic? Yes. Champions of diversity? I am with Industry Ears - I don #8217;t think so.
I really have to wonder what the criteria is for becoming an honoree of this Foundation. Take a look at their mission:
To advance the contributions of ethnic minorities and women in the cable telecommunications industry, by advocating for diversity and providing resources for the organization’s members and the industry at large.
If you look at their past honorees, you obviously see some big name companies, but I can #8217;t help but wonder if this wasn #8217;t political #8212; tryinna nuzzle up to MTV #8230;can #8217;t hurt, right? Unless the watchdogs are watching and call you on it, huh? :) And the watchdogs are watching. Right, all? I mean, we would have had this if Industry Ears didn #8217;t! ;)

Mixed Media Watch is getting a makeover
JC #038; CVK
We started this blog back in April of 2004 on a dinky little Xanga. Back then, we weren #8217;t quite sure what MMW was, but generally we thought of it as a place where we could document all the ways in which mixed race people, interracial couples and families were portrayed in the media, and then organize people to give feedback on those representations. We would organize letter-writing campaigns so that media outlets could hear both positive and negative feedback and hopefully, learn how to construct more realistic, three-dimensional representations.
Well, Mixed Media Watch has changed a lot since those early days. Over the past couple of years, we #8217;ve gradually expanded the scope of what we cover beyond just those issues that affect the mixed community. There are so many interesting topics at the intersection of race and pop culture, and of course, those topics affect mixed folks as well because after all, we #8217;re also part of those communities of color!
So what does this all mean?
Well first of all, Mixed Media Watch is getting a new name. Back when were Watching Media representations of Mixed people, the name made a lot of sense. But nowadays, it #8217;s not all that descriptive anymore. What #8217;s the new name? Well you #8217;ll just have to check back on Monday and find out. :)
Second, this blog will be getting a brand-new look. Back in April we surveyed all of you to get some feedback on what you liked about MMW, what you didn #8217;t like, what you wish we #8217;d cover more of, etc. Quite a few of you mentioned that you thought the blog #8217;s design and color scheme was a bit blah. We agree with you - we #8217;re sick of the grey too. :) Which is why we #8217;re going to switch to the same blog template we use for the Addicted to Race site. It #8217;s nice and clean, lots of white space, and it #8217;ll allow us to use widgets in the sidebar that do cool things like show you the most recent comments, the latest posts, allow you to sign up for the New Demographic monthly email newsletter, etc.
Finally, the blog will have a brand-new URL to go along with the new name. But we #8217;ll set it up so that if you go to www.mixedmediawatch.com, it #8217;ll automatically redirect you to the new blog. However, this process of transferring the blog to the new domain is going to take a lot of work, and it #8217;s quite possible that Carmen will screw the whole thing up. :) So if you check MMW this weekend it #8217;ll be a hot mess. Hopefully by Monday though, everything will be up and running. Fingers crossed!

Let #8217;s be edgy and counter-cultural by being racist! Yeah!
CVK
Jen and I have talked before about the backlash against so-called political correctness. (Check out my rant in episode 10 of Addicted to Race, for example.)
Again and again, we see people making tired, cliched racist comments and then defending them as expressions of independent thinking, a way of thumbing their nose at #8220;liberals #8221; and declaring that they won #8217;t bow down to the altar of political correctness. In reality of course, they #8217;re espousing the same old racist, sexist, homophobic ideas that have been around for centuries. There #8217;s nothing new or cutting-edge to these ideas, they #8217;ve just been rebranded as #8220;politically incorrect #8221; expressions of intellectual courage.
Unfortunately, this trend seems to be especially prevalent amongst college students. In a misguided attempt to be counter-cultural and cool, students at several colleges have published some really vile, racist crap in their campus newspapers.
In February 2004, Columbia University #8217;s #8220;alternative #8221; paper The Fed [Disclosure: I was the features editor for The Fed back in the late 90s and it was just as unfocused, irrelevant and unread then as it is now ;)] published a cartoon titled #8220;Blacky Fun Whitey #8221; supposedly in honor of Black History Month. Among other things, the cartoon claimed that #8220;Black people were invented in the 1700 #8217;s as a form of cheap labor. #8221; See Gothamist post on it.
In April of this year, a Yale University student magazine called Rumpus ran two articles, Me Love You Long Time: Yale’s Case of Yellow Fever and Miscegenation Station: Interracial Dating. Both were chock-full of stereotypes about Asians, blacks and Jews.
And now Rice University has joined this illustrious list. Philip Arthur Moore, a student at Rice, discusses the situation on his blog, TheThink. A student-run newspaper called The Rice Thresher ran a #8220;humor #8221; column which declared that Asian people #8217;s #8220;eyes are so squinty that it is difficult for our friends from the Orient to see the page, so they must stare longer. #8221; It also included a passage about #8220;white, conservative, upper-middle class straight, Christian males #8221; being too #8220;dumb #8221; to recognize their privilege. Just to make it equally offensive to all parties, we suppose.
Sure, students have the right to free speech, but is this really the kind of environment school administrators want to foster? And how are students of color supposed to feel about being the butt of the joke? From Philip:
this weekend is Families Weekend at Rice, adding more gravity to the repercussions of the actions of the back page editors at the Rice Thresher. Already, there have been a number of parents not only concerned, but deeply upset by what Rice University, a “prestigious” institution, is allowing on its grounds. Imagine the parent who has worked their entire life to ensure that their children will have a safe, healthy, and welcoming experience at Rice. Now imagine them picking up the following back page, ostensibly committed to “diversity” at Rice #8230;
And the latest scandal comes from University of Michigan, where the College Republicans were planning a #8220;Catch an Illegal Immigrant Day. #8221; You stay classy, Ann Arbor!

When the model minority myth ignores structural advantages
CVK
One of our readers objected to my calling this BusinessWeek article #8220;totally stupid #8221; in our links post:
lavanya:
I kind of resent the way MMW completely dismisses the article by calling it “totally stupid” and then not qualifying why. Mind you, I’m no defender of the model minority myth but I noticed how you guys completely avoided engaging in any thoughtful discussion on your criticisms of the article. Calling it “totally stupid” is downright lazy on your part. You might as well have headlined this article with, “You Stupid Indians Need to Know Your Real Place.”
My response was really long so I figured hey, why not reproduce it here as a post rather than letting it linger in the comments section, since not everyone reads the comments? Besides, the topic of positive stereotypes has been coming up a lot lately on MMW. I might as well weigh in on it. So here #8217;s my response:
#8212;
lavanya, point taken. These link posts are generated automatically when we bookmark pages in del.icio.us and we only have room for about 40 words to use as a description. Still, I probably could have come up with something more intelligent than “totally stupid.” :)
This was also one of those cases where I assume that most people reading MMW are already familiar with our belief system and have read a lot of past blog posts and listened to our podcasts, and would immediately know why I thought it was “stupid,” because we’re always going on about the pitfalls of positive stereotypes. But of course, not everyone falls into that category and we shouldn’t assume that. New people discover MMW everyday.
If you are familiar with our stuff, you’d know that the last thing we’re suggesting is “You Stupid Indians Need to Know Your Real Place.” What the “totally stupid” referred to was the way the author of the article not only accepts, but CELEBRATES positive stereotypes and the model minority myth. And then also attributes these positive stereotypes to some kind of innate cultural capital possessed only by Indians and Indian-Americans. [more after the jump #8230;]

#8220;If they #8217;re speaking Spanish, I tend to think they are illegal. #8221;
JCThere isn #8217;t much to say on this because it really speaks for itself. Basically, some more anti-immigration backlash. Springfield, Tennessee is considering banning Latinos from the town #8217;s public parks (make sure to check out link to view the videos of the news pieces that covered this issue). I #8217;ll just leave you with a WHAT-THE-GOOD-GOD-HELL?!
#8220;In last month #8217;s Mayor and Aldermen Meeting on July 18, City Manager Paul Nutting and at least one Alderman made negative comments about the large number of Hispanics that populate the park on the weekends. #8221;
#8220;In last month #8217;s city meeting, Alderman Ken Cherry expressed concerns for safety in the parks because of the big Hispanic crowds on weekends. Monday, he admitted his sentiments are not limited to the parks. He said, #8216;If I could do what I wanted to do, any illegal alien would be holed up in a barbwire tent and we #8217;d haul them up to where they came from and turn them loose. #8217; #8221;
#8220;When asked to comment on the possibility that not every Hispanic using the park was an #8216;illegal immigrant #8217;, Alderman Cherry responded, #8216;If they #8217;re speaking Spanish, I tend to think they are illegal. #8217; #8230; On Tuesday he said, #8216;The comment that I made about if they #8217;re speaking Spanish they #8217;re illegal immigrants, that #8217;s probably a little strong. In my mind, that #8217;s an indication that the possibility may #8230;
#8230;exist. #8217; #8221;
#8220;Not all members of Springfield #8217;s Board of Mayor and Alderman, however, are in agreement with Cherry #8217;s position on the issue. Assistant City Manager Gina Holt said, #8216;If you polled all seven of them, they #8217;d all have a totally different opinion probably and as a board they have not taken any action yet as far as establishing any policies related to the parks or any other services right now. #8217; #8221;
#8220;Springfield #8217;s Board of Mayor and Aldermen plan to hold a community meeting on September 7 to discuss the issues they #8217;ve encountered with what Alderman Cherry terms the #8216;growing Hispanic problem. #8217; #8230; Assistant City Manager Gina Holt said the goal of the September 7 board meeting is to achieve an arrangement that is fair and equitable for all. #8221;
In the 1960 #8217;s, Nashville closed its public swimming pools rather than allow them to be open to desegregated use.
Stuff like this really makes me crazy. Who are these people? And why are they stuck in the Twilight Zone? Another great reminder that we aren #8217;t all on the same page #8230;[Jen crawls out of her idealistic bubble in the heart of NYC #8230;but quickly jumps back in. :)].

Introducing New Demographic #8217;s core beliefs
JC #038; CVK
You may have noticed that we #8217;ve gradually been making changes to the way we describe New Demographic. When we launched the company in late 2004, our main goal was to raise awareness about issues surrounding mixed race identity and interracial relationships. Over the years, our work has evolved. What we realized is that we were actually using the topics of mixed race identity and interracial relationships as filters through which to discuss larger issues surrounding race in general. Essentially, we #8217;re an anti-racism training company.
We recently sat down and figured out how we could summarize the principles that guide our work so that people could quickly understand our core beliefs. We #8217;ve listed them below, and posted this video in which we discuss each of these beliefs.
We go beyond uncritical celebrations of diversity and multiculturalism and confront head-on the complex issues surrounding race and racism today.
In challenging racism, we go beyond individual acts of prejudice and recognize that racist ideals are disseminated by the very structures and systems upon which this country is built.
We go beyond the concerns of the specific community to which we belong and recognize that when one group is discriminated against, it is an affront to us all.
When discussing racism, we go beyond simply blaming “The Man” and recognize that racism persists through an intricate web of intergroup and intragroup oppression and privilege.
We go beyond “diversity speak” and academic jargon and recognize that using direct, down-to-earth language is the best way to engage people in anti-racism work.
We go beyond acceptance of finite racial categories and recognize that race has no biological basis, but that the social construct of race impacts us all.
