New Dem Polls Find GOP Candidates Ahead in IL, WA, CO and AK

New polls out this morning from the Dem-leaning Public Policy Polling finds that in addition to Pat Toomey leading in Pennsylvania, Republican candidates also continue to lead in Illinois, Washington State, Colorado and Alaska. Key excerpts are below....
KIRKS LEADS IN ILLINOIS....
Republicans continue to lead the races for both Governor and Senator in Illinois, albeit by close margins. Mark Kirk is ahead of Alexi Giannoulias 46-42 for the state's open Senate seat and Bill Brady is ahead of Pat Quinn 45-40 for Governor.
Key graph - Independents are leaning strongly toward the GOP. Kirk leads Giannoulias 46-31 with them and Brady has a 45-27 advantage over Quinn with them. Republican voters are much more unified around their candidates this year than Democrats are. 87% of GOP identifiers are planning to vote for Kirk while only 78% of Democrats are planning to vote for Giannoulias.

ROSSI LEADS IN WASHINGTON STATE....
Every time PPP has polled the Washington Senate race this year it's found the race to be within 2 or 3 points and our final poll there is no exception. But there is one twist- for the first time we find Dino Rossi leading Patty Murray, by a 50-48 margin.
Key graph -- The most worrisome number for Murray within the poll, beyond her small overall disadvantage, is that among voters who say they've already returned their ballots Rossi's advantage is wider at 52-47.

BUCK LEADS IN COLORADO....
The Senate race in Colorado continues to look like it will be one of the closest in the country on Tuesday night. PPP's final poll there finds Ken Buck ahead of Michael Bennet by the slimmest of margins, 49-48.
Key graph -- Each candidate has his party base pretty much sewn up. Bennet is winning 87% of Democrats and Buck is winning 86% of Republicans. Giving Buck his slim lead is a 50-46 advantage among independents.

MILLERS LEADS IN ALASKA....
Joe Miller is favored heading into the final two days of the US Senate campaign in Alaska. 37% of voters say they'll pick him while 30% plan to vote for Scott McAdams and another 30% plan to write in Lisa Murkowski.
Key graph -- In a cycle that has seen a lot of strange races, this one may well be the strangest. It would be premature to write off anyone at this point but Miller does look to be the favorite headed into the final stretch.

Johnson Still Maintains Substantial Lead Over Feingold

In Wisconsin, a new McClatchy/Marist poll shows businessman Ron Johnson with a substantial 52%-45% lead over embattled 18-year incumbent Russ Feingold heading into the final 48 hours of the campaign:
In Wisconsin, Republican Ron Johnson leads three-term Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold, 52 percent to 45 percent hellip; Feingold hellip; falters badly with conservatives, who make up 45 percent of the electorate. They reject Feingold by 88 percent to 10 percent. Johnson scores well with those who think the worst in the economy is yet to come, winning them by 75 percent to 21 percent. Among those who disapprove of Obama mdash; half the voters mdash; 91 percent prefer Johnson.
Meanwhile, Feingold rsquo;s hometown newspaper, the Janesville Gazette, endorsed Ron Johnson, noting that ldquo;It rsquo;s time for change in Washington. rdquo;
Russ Feingold champions himself as a maverick who votes his conscience. When his party most needs him, however, he rsquo;s there. In recent months, he voted for two major spending packages mdash;the stimulus bill and health care reform. When General Motors was rolling out of Janesville, Feingold lacked visibility. He issued statements from Washington or sent staffers on assignments. If having a Janesville native in the U.S. Senate is to our advantage, it wasn rsquo;t apparent when his hometown needed him most. Feingold rsquo;s arrogance has grown during his time in Washington. Six years ago, we endorsed him for a third sixyear term over Tim Michels hellip; Johnson earns our endorsement. Feingold claims to be a fiscal conservative, but we see no change in Washington rsquo;s spending habits. Rising deficits are a national embarrassment. They threaten our country rsquo;s stability.

Regarding the breaking story out of Alaska that the Anchorage CBS affiliate was caught on an inadvertent voicemail conspiring against Republican nominee Joe Miller NRSC Communications Director Brian Walsh said:
ldquo;If this voicemail is authentic, which is appears to be, it is deeply disturbing. It should trouble all Americans that any member of the media would attempt to purposefully smear a nominee for the U.S. Senate. CBS owes an immediate explanation to Joe Miller and his campaign. rdquo;

Democrats Continue to Deny They Face an Enthusiasm

Finally, as you may have seen, the Democratic National Committee was out with a new memo yesterday arguing again ndash; in the face of demonstrable facts showing otherwise - that the early voting data so far in key states debunks the notion that they face an enthusiasm gap. No word yet if the DNC has been paying outside media consultants to write their memos.
