WALKING IN THE LIGHT
quot;God said, Let there be
Light; and there was Light. quot;--- Gen1:3.
quot;Ye were sometimes darkness,
but now are ye light in the Lord: Walk as children of Light. quot;--
Eph 5:8.
ST. PAUL makes use of this
passage in Genesis, when He says, that quot;God who commanded the
fight to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give
the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of
Jesus Christ. quot; He seems to go back in his experience to that
remarkable vision on the road to Damascus, when the light shone,
and he saw the face of the Lord Jesus. It was as though he had
passed through the experience of chaos, while kicking against the
goad of conviction, and at that moment, which he could never
forget, God said: quot;Let there be light. quot; Looking up, he saw the
light of the glory of God reflected in that dear Face that looked
down on him with ineffable love. It was life out of death; light
replaced darkness, and peace chased away the last vestige of
storm.
This is ever the result and
climax of the work in our hearts wrought by the Holy Spirit. He
leads us out of darkness; He takes of the things of Christ and
shows them unto us. His one aim is to glorify our Saviour, and to
make Him the Alpha and Omega of our faith, as we walk in the
light.
When I was in Tasmania, I
was shown a great mountain range on which was a vast lake,
fifty-two miles in circumference. The overflow yielded a perennial
waterfall of a thousand feet, the force of which was translated
into electricity which made light and power cheap for great
factories and for domestic needs. It seemed to me, as I thought
about it, that the great sheet of water resembled the Love of God,
in its longing to help mankind; that the descending waterfall
might be taken to illustrate the Incarnation of our Saviour, who
was the Sent-One of the Eternal Trinity; and that the electric
current, invisible but mighty, was typical of the Holy Spirit, who
brings to our hearts the Light and Power of the Divine Nature. The
lesson is obvious, that as the manufacturer or the scientist
invents machinery to meet the conditions on which alone the
electric current can do its work, so must we learn to adapt
ourselves to receive and transmit the power and light of God,
which comes to us through our union with Jesus.
PRAYER
May the Holy Spirit keep us
ever walking in the light of Thy countenance. May He fill our
hearts with the sense of Thy nearness and loving fellowship. Order
our steps in Thy way, and then walk with us, for in Thee is no
darkness at all. AMEN.

quot;He that walketh
uprightly walketh surely quot; (Proverbs 10:9).
His walk may be slow, but it is sure.
He that hasteth to be rich shall not be innocent nor sure; but steady
perseverance in integrity, if it does not bring riches, will certainly
bring peace. In doing that which is just and right, we are like one
walking upon a rock, for we have confidence that every step we take is
upon solid and safe ground. On the other hand, the utmost success through
questionable transactions must always be hollow and treacherous, and the
man who has gained it must always be afraid that a day of reckoning will
come, and then his gains will condemn him. Let us stick to truth and
righteousness. By God's grace let us imitate our LORD and Master, in whose
mouth no deceit was ever found. Let us not be afraid of being poor, nor of
being treated with contempt. Never, on any account whatever, let us do
that which our conscience cannot justify. If we lose inward peace, we lose
more than a fortune can buy. If we keep in the LORD's own way and never
sin against our conscience, our way is sure against all comers. Who is he
that can harm us if we be followers of that which is good? We may be
thought fools by fools if we are firm in our integrity; but in the place
where judgment is infallible we shall be approved.

DECEMBER The First
A FAITHFUL FRIEND
Proverbs 27:1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.
quot;A FAITHFUL friend is a strong defense.”
He is a gift of God, and therefore a “means of grace.” The Lord’s seal is
upon his ministry. How we impoverish ourselves by separating these
precious gifts from their Giver? We desecrate many a fair shrine by
emptying it of God. We turn many a temple into just a common house. When
we think of our friend let us link him to our Father, and fall upon our
knees in grateful praise.
He is God’s minister in his encouragements. When he cheers me, it is “the
Sun of righteousness who rises with healing in His wings.” All radiant
words are just lamps for “the light of life.” All genial speech carries
flame from the altar fire of heaven.
And he is God’s minister in his reproofs. He uses a clean knife: there is
no poison on the blade. And when he does surgeon’s work upon me, it is
clean work, healthy work, the relentless enemy of disease. Some men cut
me, and the wound festers. There is malice in the deed. My friend wounds
me in order that he may give me a larger, sweeter life.

DIGEST - December 1, Missionary Biography- Temple
Gairdner...
Temple Gairdner was born to a wealthy family in Scotland
in 1873. In 1882, at age nine, he was sent away from
home to attend a private school in preparation for later
studies at Oxford University. When his younger brother
suddenly died during Temple's second year at Oxford, he
began thinking about the unimportance of a successful
life, of popularity and the many things he had
previously prized. From then on he was determined to
follow where He would call him.
At the end of the 1893 school year, Temple attended a
student congress and heard testimonies of what others
were doing for Christ. In his heart the question came to
him, What have you done? What will you do? The next day
he joined the Student Volunteer Missionary Union,
declaring his readiness to serve as a missionary.
Gairdner worked hard to prepare for his life's work. He
studied Arabic and mastered it so well in six months
that he could read and teach in the language. His Arabic
teacher proudly commented, quot;He became more Egyptian than
the Egyptians. quot;
In 1897, when he was 24, Gairdner's application as a
missionary candidate was presented to the Church
Missionary Society. He was assigned to Cairo, and
because of his education and social standing, his
instructions read, quot;You are appointed to join Mr.
Douglas Thornton in Cairo with a special work... among
students and others of the educated classes of Muslims. quot;
Pray for God to give humility to His children who can do
all things through Christ who strengthens them.-AL
Matthew 19:29 And everyone who has left houses or
brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or
fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much
and will inherit eternal life.
Like all of us, Temple Gairdner had some prioritizing to
do in his life. Was he going to enjoy the good life
offered by being part of the United Kingdom's elite, or
was he going to take Christ at His word and put His
Kingdom first? That would mean leaving family and
friends. But it would also mean gaining brothers and
sisters in Christ.
Pray that thousands of new workers will take Jesus at
His word just as Temple Gairdner did and leave whatever
needs to be left in order to extend His Kingdom..

sovereign mercy. I would desire again this day to make a fresh
application to the sin-atoning blood of Jesus to cleanse away my
sins. O God, do Thou keep me down, and then I need fear no fall! (Ed:
Amen!) O visit Zion, and preserve Thy Church; let her yet
shine forth in glory! April showers have been coming down to-day;
the Lord does not forget His promises. Jesus took my heart: “er

J. Barton Payne writes that quot;This great verse, the best
known in all Chronicles, expresses as does no other in Scripture
God’s requirement for national blessing, whether in Solomon’s
land, in Ezra’s, or in our own. Those who believe must forsake
their sins, turn from the life that is centered in self, and yield
to God’s word and will. Then, and only then, will heaven send
revival. quot;
May God grant His children
grace to plead for a Spirit driven, God glorifying, Word centered,
Christ exalting revival of the Body of Christ in America.
First of all, then, I urge
that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made
on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, in
order that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness
and dignity. (1Ti 2:1,2)
Our Heavenly Father
desires to hear His children cry out with quot;fasting, sackcloth and
ashes quot; (Da 9:3), reflecting not the external appearance of our
bodies, but more accurately the internal condition of our hearts -
sinful (Da 9:5 - quot;we quot; not quot;they quot;!), rejecting His Holy Word
(Da 9:6- quot;we quot;), shameful (Da 9:8- quot;us quot;), contrite, and
broken (Ps 51:17), over our national rejection of God's righteous

Daniel's prayer (Da
9:3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19) is
an excellent quot;template quot; for all saints to emulate as we begin to
intercede with a sense of urgency for
America and especially for God's Name and reputation considering
that the world thinks of us as a quot;Christian nation quot; and we once
called ourselves quot;One Nation Under God quot;!
Matthew Henry's comments
on Lev 26:40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46 (directed first to Israel but
applicable to any nation that rejects Him)
Among the Israelites, persons
were not always prosperous or afflicted according to their
obedience or disobedience. But national prosperity was the
effect of national obedience, and national judgments
were brought on by national wickedness. Israel was under a
peculiar covenant.
National wickedness will end
in the ruin of any people,
especially where the Word of God and the light of the Gospel are
enjoyed.
Sooner or later, sin will be
the ruin, as well as the reproach, of every people.
Oh that, being humbled for
our sins,
we might avert the rising storm before it bursts upon us!

were published in 1706 and national revival, the
First Great Awakening,
occurred in the 1730's and 1740's! Brethren, there is hope because
there is a quot;God of hope quot;! Ro 15:13)
