I Know What You Read Last Summer - E-Readers and Privacy
By Audrey Watters / December 7, 2010 6:00 PM / 0 Comments
Since WikiLeaks released 250,000 secret U.S. government cables a little over a week ago, the world is suddenly terribly concerned about what we may or may not be reading. Some countries - and some U.S. government agencies - are blocking their people from accessing the Wikileaks site, for fear of reading.
So the EFF's E-Book Buyer's Guide to E-Book Privacy comes at a good time - not just for holiday shopping, but for those of us that want to read that other famous trove of classified materials, The Pentagon Papers (or, okay, perhaps read other things too) with some assurance of privacy.

Seedcamp Launches a European Version of AngelList
By Audrey Watters / December 7, 2010 4:07 PM / 0 Comments
European startup incubator Seedcamp has launched a new online platform, Seedsummit.org, aimed at connecting startups with European seed investors. An attempt to create a European version of the incredibly successful AngelList, plans for the website grew out of the Seedsummit conference last year, along with the recognition that Europe needed a "stronger more cohesive network to support enrepreneurs."

VMware To Offer Mobile Virtualization with LG Electronics
By Alex Williams / December 7, 2010 3:31 PM / View Comments
VMware and LG Electronics are teaming up to provide mobile virtualization for employee-owned Android devices.
Neither VMware nor LG Electronics can say when the mobile virtualization will be available. It could be next year but a lot depends on research by the carriers and how the service fits into product roll-outs.
Mobile virtualization is similar to desktop virtualization. The device is partitioned. Applications may be isolated. An employee may have their personal and professional contacts on one device. The enterprise information is in a virtualized environment that is isolated from the employee's personal information.

New Visualization Tool Gives Real-Time View of What Scientists Are Reading
By Audrey Watters / December 7, 2010 2:36 PM / 0 Comments
The scientific publisher Springer has launched a free analytics tool that gives you a peek into how people are using the publisher's online content. The tool provides a number of visualizations based on real-time data aggregated from Springer's online offerings. Springer's publications include nearly 5 million documents from about 41,000 e-books, 1160 book series, and 2524 academic journals.
The interactive visualizations include a map showing where the downloads are coming from, a constantly updated keyword tag cloud, and a graphical and textual display of real-time downloads. There's also a search feature that shows you a chart of the downloads, as well as a "Top Five Most Downloaded" list for every journal and book.

TweetDeck's New Chrome App: Awesome Set to Get Better in Days
By Marshall Kirkpatrick / December 7, 2010 1:53 PM / 4 Comments
Google Chrome announced the availability of its new web app store today, which means web applications are easier to ever to access and can leverage HTML5 features like local storage mixed with web pages.
The first one I tried? My trusty Twitter client Tweetdeck. I've said for years that Twitter pays my rent as a journalist, but when I say that - these days that means TweetDeck too. So how does the new TweetDeck for Chrome look? It looks great. It feels great. It is great, if you've got casual Twitter needs. I'll be sticking with the desktop version, myself, but hopefully only for a few more days, as the TweetDeck crew adds features to the Chrome version.

Microsoft's IE9 Gets "Tracking Protection" for Better Browser Privacy
By Audrey Watters / December 7, 2010 1:41 PM / 0 Comments
On the heels of an FTC report on consumer privacy and its recommendations for developing an online "Do Not Track" option, Microsoft has announced that IE9 will soon offer consumers "Tracking Protection." The new feature will be part of IE9's beta release early next year.
Tracking Protection will be an opt-in mechanism within the browser for users to identify and block certain forms of tracking. In addition Tracking Protection Lists will enable consumers to have more control over what third-party sites can track them while they're online - creating white lists, of sorts, for sites in which consumers don't mind sharing their data.

All You Need to Know From Today's Google Chrome Announcement
By Audrey Watters / December 7, 2010 1:01 PM / 2 Comments
Google's Chrome team made a number of major announcements this morning, including the unveiling of the long-awaited Chrome Operating System. The key theme of today's press event was the Web itself, as Chrome OS promises a platform that is entirely Web-based.
In conjunction with Google's new operating system, available on devices in the middle of 2011, Google also launched a store for Web apps and announced some updates to the Chrome browser.

Kindle for the Web: Sounds Like...The Web, Only For a Fee
By Marshall Kirkpatrick / December 7, 2010 12:52 PM / 4 Comments
Amazon's Kindle books will soon be readable as content embedded on Web pages and Web page publishers will be able to land affiliate fees for Kindle books they sell to their own audiences, the company announced today.
You too can now pay $9.99 to read text on a Web page, in Amazon's proprietary format, with the graphically limited format of a printed text-only book of yore. Sure, your bookmarks and notes will carry over from the Web pages you're reading on to other devices - but could that possibly be enough to warrant paying for Web-embedded eBooks? I don't think so. Once it hits the Web, premium content is only sellable because of scarcity or a superior user experience. I don't see either of those being true in this case.

MOG Available in Chrome Web Store: Here's How to Get It
By Mike Melanson / December 7, 2010 12:21 PM / 3 Comments
Google unveiled its long-awaited Chrome OS, notebook and Web store today and already we're itching to see what life lived entirely in the cloud is like - not that we're far off as it is. While we don't have our hands on a Chrome OS notebook quite yet, if we did, MOG would be one of the first apps we would install.
MOG has announced a beta release of its music player for the Chrome Web store and we have to admit, we're excited to see one of our favorite cloud-based music players hit the shelves.

Report: Google Offering Chrome Notebook "Test Drives"
By Sarah Perez / December 7, 2010 7:18 AM / 11 Comments
In case there was any doubt that today's Google Chrome event would include the reveal of Google's new notebook computers running its Web-based computer operating system, Google itself has begun advertising Chrome notebooks within its Chrome Web browser.
At the top of the "new tab" page in Chrome, Google asks Web surfers "Would you like to test drive a Chrome notebook?" Users could either click "Apply Now" or "Close" to dismiss the message.
This appears to be accidental, and the message is no longer showing.

Google Books' "Page Not Found" is a Whale Fail, Not a Fail Whale
By Sarah Perez / December 7, 2010 7:17 AM / 3 Comments
I'd like to take a moment out of your regularly scheduled tech news reading to point out something that just made my day: Google Books has a great "page not found page." It's a "Whale Fail," not a "Fail Whale."
The page is a play on words referring to Twitter's "Fail Whale," the well-known "Twitter down" page that became famous - or rather, infamous - during Twitter's heavy growth period back in 2008.

Wikileaks Founder Julian Assange Arrested in London
By Mike Melanson / December 7, 2010 6:47 AM / 3 Comments
The much-maligned Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange has been arrested this morning in London. Assange turned himself in to London police to face a Swedish arrest warrant for rape allegations, which Assange has denied.
Despite this and a tide of other setbacks, the classified document publishing website remains online and assures its followers that it will continue its release of secret and classified documents.

2010 has been the year of early adopters for the cloud automation market. IT savvy users in development, test, training and sales functions adopted the cloud model to accelerate application lifecycle management. With recent innovations in usability and self-service capabilities, functional users in consulting, training, and sales demo areas are becoming the direct, empowered consumers of cloud services with little to no support from IT. Skytap data for 2010 shows actual usage of the Skytap solution grew by 4,00% when compared to last year. Skytap users credit their usage growth to usability and collaboration capabilities, which are delivered in a single cloud solution through Skytap.

How Online Reading Habits Have Changed Over 2010
By Richard MacManus / December 6, 2010 6:30 PM / 21 Comments
One of the more subtle trends of 2010 has been the way that our reading habits have changed, due to a convergence of other Web trends: mobile apps, real-time Web (mostly Twitter), and social networking as a way to track news (mostly Facebook). In the previous era of the Web, the so-called Web 2.0, RSS Readers and start pages were all the rage. Over 2010, though, more people used tools like Twitter, Facebook, Instapaper, Flipboard, LazyWeb, Feedly and TweetDeck, to track news.
Nowadays I'm more likely to find stories to read via a vertical aggregator (the media-focused Mediagazer is my current favorite) and save them to Instapaper for later reading via my iPhone or iPad. I still use Google Reader, but in all honesty I now use it more to scan than to read.

Facebook: We're Not Kicking Wikileaks Off Our Site
By Marshall Kirkpatrick / December 6, 2010 5:47 PM / 36 Comments
Classified document publishing website Wikileaks has now been kicked off of Amazon, Paypal, its DNS server and its Swiss bank account - but it lives on, including across hundreds of mirrored sites and is the subject for widespread discussion on Facebook and Twitter.
Site leader Julian Assange is hiding on the run but said to be facing imminent arrest in multiple countries. US Republican party figureheads have reportedly called for him to be hunted down like a Taliban leader and executed. He may very well be named TIME Magazine's Person of the Year for pushing the envelope on questions of technology disruption of media and diplomatic secrecy. Senator Joe Lieberman called on US corporations to stop doing business with Wikileaks but tonight Facebook has issued a statement about its stance: for now at least, Wikileaks can continue publishing updates to supporters on the world's largest social network.
