The Daily Maine Fact
A native of Turner, Maine, helped establish Western music in Japan. Japan's education ministry hired Luther W. Mason as chief instructor at what is now the Tokyo University of Music, starting in 1880. The piano instruction book that Mason gave to his students, by German composer Ferdinand Beyer, remains the standard piano exercise book in Japan. New Haven, Conn.: Yale University Press, 1999)
