The American Muslim - TAM - The Original
(Note: The American Muslim is not and never has been in any way affiliated with the Muslim American Society or their publication. Since 2001 they have gone by a remarkably similar title, however we are proud to be the original, published in print or online since 1989.)
HISTORIC MOMENT - PETER KING #8217;S HEARINGS
Rep. Peter King #8217;s hearing #8220;The Extent of Radicalization in the American Muslim Community and that Community #8217;s Response. #8221; took place on March 10, 2011.
TAM has an article The American Muslim Community and Rep. Peter King #8217;s #8220;Islamic #8221; Radicalization Hearings which has a great deal of background on Peter King and these hearings, and an extensive article collection. We also have a series of articles breaking down various aspects of the hearings:
- Peter King #8217;s Hearing: What Was the Point? discussing the content of the hearings, with a collection of articles written after the hearing ended.
- Peter King #8217;s Civics Lesson for American Muslims which has a collection of anti-Muslim statements by elected representatives and government officials made during and before the hearings. And, The GOP Anti-Muslim Limbo: How Low Can They Go? discussing the ramifications of these bigoted statements.
- Existing reports and studies on radicalization in the American Muslim Community
Polls, Surveys, and Statistics Relating to Islam and Muslims with actual hard evidence so lacking in the hearing.
- Response of Civic Organizations and Interfaith Community to #8220;Muslim Radicalization #8221; Hearings
- Elected Representatives amp; Government Officials Who HAVE Questioned Islamophobia with quotes from elected representives and government officials attempting to counter the bias of this hearing both during and before the hearing.
- Peter King #8217;s hearing: witness testimonies - allegations but no facts
- Zuhdi Jasser and AIFD - Identified by Rep. King as the Ideal American Muslim Leadership
- Does Rep. King #8217;s IRA/Terrorist Connection Matter?
- Answers to Peter King #8217;s Claims About the American Muslim Community which lays out all of his claims and allegations and provides detailed answers to each. (e.g. Do Muslims cooperate with law enforcement? Do Muslims speak out against terrorism and extremism? Are most Muslims terrorists? Are 80 to 85% of mosques run by radicals? Have American Muslim organizations responded to the issue of radicalization? Are mosques the source of radicalization? etc.)
- The scope of Rep. Kings Hearings Creates Homeland #8220;in"Security
All of these articles will be updated as further information comes in, and there will be more articles in this series.
A HISTORIC MOMENT - PRO DEMOCRACY MOVEMENTS IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND NORTH AFRICA
The people of Tunisia were the first to stand up to a dictator and demand democracy. Now Egypt and Yemen have joined them. This is a moment of hope for real change and justice. Pray for the people of these countries that they may have success.
President John F. Kennedy once said, #8220;Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable. #8221;
Pray for the people of all the countries yearning to be free!
TIMELINE OF KEY EVENTS and SOME KEY ARTICLES ON THE SITUATION to be updated regularly
ACTION - There are many items listed in our ACTION section that allow individuals to take a stand on important issues. Some of these issues of importance to the Muslim community have very surprisingly received little attention. We update this with new action alerts regularly.
#8220;Do not be people without minds of your own, saying that if others treat you well you will treat them well, and that if they do wrong you will do wrong to them. Instead, accustom yourselves to do good if people do good and not to do wrong (even) if they do evil. #8221;

ISLAMOPHOBIA - RESPONSES TO ISLAMOPHOBIA AND EXTREMISM
NOTE: We have had as part of our Muslim Voices against Terrorism and Extremism resources a section on responses to Islamophobia. This was in five parts: - Responses to Claims Made ABOUT Islam and Muslims in General - Responses to Claims Made ABOUT Qur #8217;an Verses, Arabic Terms, Prophet Muhammad - Responses to False Claims ABOUT Muslim Individuals amp; Organizations amp; Incidents Involving Muslims - Responses to Actual Extremist Statements amp; Incidents of Extremism or violence BY Muslims - Responses to Claims Made BY Specific Individuals and Organizations About Muslims. Because of a restriction in the possible length of articles, we were unable to organize these in a more user-friendly manner. Our webmaster has now resolved this problem, and we have combined all these five sections into one section. The entries are alphabetical, and it should now be much easier to locate a response to a particular issue, incident, or individual. In order to keep load time down for our readers, this single resource will still be divided into two sections: A to L, and M to Z. A Control-F search for the name, subject, or incident should help you navigate this new section easily. Every attempt has been made to cross reference as much as possible. Sheila Musaji 3/5/2010.

Articles from print issues of TAM going online. You may have noticed that we have been able to get volunteers to help get all of the old articles from the print issues of TAM scanned, retyped, and edited, and are working hard to get these online a few at a time. Wherever you see an * after an article that is one of the old issues from 1989 to 1995. What is fascinating is how many are still relevant.
