Socorro Peace Vigil
Socorro Peace Vigil in New Mexico has been active in countering militarism with their weekly vigil against current U.S. wars (which in October commemorated their 8 year anniversary). Socorro Peace Vigil has also been doing counter-recruitment work in local classrooms and at the school board level, working with the local chapter of Iraq Veterans Against the War.

Karl Bissinger, 1914-2008
Beloved longtime WRL staff member Karl Bissinger succumbed to a stroke on November 19. Karl was an energetic and creative fund raiser, an enthusiastic civil disobedient, a generous host to countless meetings, and a loyal and supportive friend.
Ralph DiGia: 1914-2008
Ralph, a lifelong war resister and pacifist, died February 1 in New York City. Ralph had been the heart and soul of WRL since he came on staff shortly after the end of World War II.
Bill Sutherland, 1918-2010
Bill Sutherland, unofficial ambassador between the peoples of Africa and the Americas for over fifty years, died peacefully on January 2, 2010. He was 91.

Today in Grand Central, 2,000 flyers were distributed to hundreds of passersby who engaged with members of the War Resisters League and many other organizations, including Peace Action, South Asia Solidarity Initiative, Think Outside the Bomb, and Physicians for Social Responsibility, about nuclear disarmament.

On Monday, June 14, twenty-four activists with Witness Against Torture were acquitted in Washington, D.C. Superior Court of charges of “unlawful entry with disorderly conduct.” The charges stemmed from demonstrations at the US Capitol on January 21,2010 - the date by which President Obama had promised the closure of the Guantanamo detention camp. 2009 Peace Awardees arrested in Zimbabwe
Ellen Chademana and Ignatius Muhambi of the gay rights group Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe,2009 WRL Peace Awardees, were arrested last week after a raid on their offices. Ellen and Ignatius were tortured while in custody and were initially denied release. They were finally released on $200 bail each on Thursday. Read More...
