About Yiddish Audio on the Internet and at our web site: The Yiddish Voice was the first Internet web site to make Yiddish audio available at the click of a button. We first introduced
Yiddish audio to the Internet in May, 1996, by putting a rare recording of Sholom Aleichem on our web site. We subsequently improved on the delivery process by obtaining a
realaudio server, which let us quot;stream out quot; audio in real time, letting you can begin hearing the sounds seconds after you click, no matter how long the piece you're hearing.
In order to listen, you need the free Real Audio Player from Real Networks. Download Real Player free.
The material we present at this site will change from time to time, so stay tuned. We have been receiving many requests to expand our radio service in the direction of the net.
We'd welcome your comments about this service, as well as reports of any problems or inconveniences you encounter, via email: #0114; #0097; #0100; #0105; #0111; #0064; #0121; #0118; #0046; #0111; #0114; #0103;
Our audio of Sholom Aleichem reading from his own work appears below on this page, with a brand new introduction by Henry Sapoznik.
Several of the brief rundowns below are audio enhanced, and you can hear for yourself some important elements of our broadcast -- look for the Real Audio logo and these
words: Audio Available!

The Yiddish Voice, Boston's weekly Yiddish-language radio show,
mourns the passing of Elvira David, who died on September 14, 2006,
at age 75. Elvira David, the mother of the show's host and producer

war, she and her sister were taken in by relatives in New York. She
finished high school, then attended Hood College, earning a degree
in Chemistry, and eventually settled in Chicago, where she met her
husband Fred David. From the 1950's through the 1980's, the couple
raised a family and ran a business. In the late 1980's, they moved
to Los Angeles, where she died on September 14, 2006, after an
extraordinarily long bout with Shy-Drager Syndrome, a neurological

17 October 2004: We've just received the sad news that our
friend and long-time contributor to
The Yiddish Voice Miriam
Libenson has passed away. She was just over ninety years old. She
lived her last years in Israel, which she always called "home".
Miriam Libenson was our radio program's resident poet as well as our
main commentator on religious and Jewish-holiday matters. Our
collection of her recordings are one of the crowns of our show's
archives and are played regularly to this day. They were filled with
Jewish knowledge, highlighted by memories of her youth in her shtetl
Aniksht (Lithuania), and usually accompanied by her own original
Yiddish poetry -- she'd written poetry her whole life. She will be
greatly missed by all our volunteers and listeners. Most
significantly, she was a lifelong friend of our cohost Hasia Segal.
Our deepest sympathy to her sons Michael and Eli, and all her family.

A correspondent in nearby New Haven, Connecticut, writes,
quot;for 50 years the Greater New Haven area has been blessed to be
able to listen to and enjoy Beryl Howard's American Jewish Variety
Hour. It is broadcast every Sunday morning, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., on
WADS-690 on the AM dial. I write as a listener, not as part of the
show. quot;Update from our correspondent (6/19/01): after some
54 years his show is off the air because the small AM station WADS,
Radio Amor, that he was on is in financial difficulty.b
Update from our correspondent (6/19/06): It is with great
sadness that I report to you that Beryl Howard passed away early this
year. Unfortunately I have no other details as to exact date etc.

The
Jewish Program, on the air since 1962, is heard in Montreal on
Canadian station CFMB (AM)
1280/Montreal every Sunday from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., and on
Wednesday/Thursday overnight at midnight for one hour (EST). On the
Sunday show, the first hour and a half is in Yiddish and English, and
the last half hour is in Hebrew; the Wednesday night show is in
Hebrew. Host and senior producer Nachum Wilchesky
lt;nachum22@hotmail.com gt; is a veteran Yiddish radio host, and one
of the city's major Yiddish cultural figures. To listen to the station
live, go to www.cfmb.cab, and
click on "CFMB Live!" in the upper left corner of the page at 12:00
noon Sundays (Montreal time) for the Yiddish-language broadcast.
(Note that the station's signal is strong enough to reach some US
points as far south as Burlington, VT) Update July 20, 2009
from our friend Grunia Kohn: sadly, Nochem
Wichesky has passed away. Also, the Jewish Program no longer has a
Yiddish block. Just seven years ago, Mr. Wilchesky sent the
following note to Mendele, advising of the 40th anniversary of his
radio show, "Di Yiddishe Sho":
Date: Thu, 19 Dec 2002 18:55:19 -0500 (EST)
From: "Nachum Wilchesky" nachum22@hotmail.com
Subject: Di yiddishe sho
And so it goes. Yet another milestone. 40 years ago, rather
accidentally , and somewhat unsure of myself, onSunday, December 23rd
1962 at 12 noon I sat in a radio studio and in a most mellifluous voice
proclaimed "Di yiddishe shoh, Hashaah hayehudit, the Jewish hour", a
one hour Radio Program on CFMB 1410AM in Yiddish, Hebrew and English.
Much has changed in 40 years. For one thing I very soon had to change
the name from a "shoh" to a "program", in Yiddish, becaause people who
wanted me to use pure Yiddish on my program when Yiddish was spoken
objected to my calling it "di Yiddishe Show"! And forty years later the
mellifluousness of the voice is also not what iy used to be.. Still on
this Sunday, the 22nd of December we complete forty years of
Broadcasting Jewish programming , and not only in Montreal , but
everywhere where Jews are in the world, through the Internet on
WWW.CFMB.CA.
Regards,
Nachum Wilchesky
